Setting the Stage
• Inside the Game: Navy (3-1, 0-0 Patriot League) will look to bounce back after dropping its first game of the season when the Mids make their first trip to High Point (2-1, 0-0 Atlantic 10) to battle the Panthers. Navy and High Point will square off at Vert Stadium with faceoff slated for 11:00 am. Joe Amplo owns a 21-12 record in his four seasons at the helm of the Navy program, while the Panthers are under the direction of Jon Torpey who is in his 12th season. Saturday's contest marks just the second meeting (High Point, 1-0) in a series that began last February.

Navy Quick Hits
• Return to the Tar Heel State: While Saturday's contest marks Navy's first trip to High Point, it will be the 25th time in its 116-year and over 1,200-game history that Navy will play a game in the state of North Carolina. Navy has played at Duke 10 times and at North Carolina 14 times. The last time the Mids played a game in North Carolina was coincidentally on the same day (Feb. 25) in 2011 when they fell short in a 10-8 loss to #12 North Carolina.
• Defense Makes Statement Early: Navy's defense has given up a combined 3 goals in the opening quarter of its 4 games this season and 7 total in the first half. The Mids have held their foes scoreless for at least the first 10 minutes of all 4 contests with the earliest goal scored at the 4:57 mark of the first quarter by Hofstra. Mount St. Mary's scored it's first goal at the 3:18 mark, Manhattan scored at 2:56, while Queens did not score its first goal until 10:55 in the third quarter.
• The Race to 100: Co-captain
Patrick Skalniak (Sr / M) is looking to become just the 37th player in program history to reach the 100-point career scoring milestone. Skalniak heads into the Manhattan contest with 90-career points, having produced 51 goals and 39 assists. Among the list of Navy's 100-point scorers, 16 players have added their names to the list in the last 25 years, including Christian Daniel (122) in 2021, Greyson Torain (132) in 2019 and Ryan Wade (119) in 2019. More than 40 years after graduating, Jeff Long remains the Mids' all-time leading scorer with 233 points (84-149).
• Hat Tricks Abound: Navy has had 2 players record hat tricks in 3 of its 4 contests this season -
Patrick Skalniak (5) and
Henry Tolker (3) vs. Mount St. Mary's,
Carter Ash (3) and
Jeff Lachenmeyer (3) vs. Queens and Tolker (5) and
Xavier Arline (3) against Hofstra. For the first time this season, no Navy player scored more than a goal in its game against Manhattan.
• Goalkeeper Shuffle: Navy has utilized at least 2 goalkeepers in each of its 4 games this season.
Pat Ryan (Sr), who started all 15 contests a year ago, has split time with freshman
Dan Daly. Ryan has started 3 of the 4 contests where he has made 24 saves (77.4 sv%) and allowed 7 goals (GAA). Daly, meanwhile, has played in all 4 games, including a start against Queens, and has produced 18 saves (50.0 sv%) and given up 18 goals (9.49 GAA).
Scouting High point
• Head coach Jon Torpey is in his 12th season at High Point after being selected as the program's first head coach in 2010. The Panthers' first season of competition was 2012.
• Torpey has guided the Panthers to a pair of SoCon Tournament titles (2015, '21).
• High Point lost its opener at Duke (20-8) on Feb. 7, but has since picked up wins over Detroit Mercy (17-2) and VMI (17-11).
• While the Panthers lost leading scorer Asher Nolting (34-47=81) to graduation, they do return 4 of their top 5 scorers from last year's squad. Brayden Mayea (Jr), Jack VanOverbeke (Jr), Jack Sawyer (R-Jr) and Michael Ippolito (Gr) combine for a strong corps of attackmen who have once again produced for High Point. VanOverbeke (19-10=29 in 2022) leads the way in 2023 with 11 points on 9 goals and 2 assists, while Ippolito (17-2=19 in 2022) has produced 10 points on 7 goals and 3 assists. Mayea was the team's second-leading scorer a year ago with a team-high 40 goals to go along with 9 assists and this spring has contributed 9 points on 6 goals and 3 assists. Sawyer (13-10-23 in 2022), meanwhile, has turned in 6 points on 4 goals and 2 assists this spring.
• Seven different players took at least 1 faceoff for the Panthers a year ago, however, Collin Hoben (Sr) returns as their main threat. Last season, he won 103 of 211 (48.8) draws. He is 36 of 59 (61.0) in his 3 games this season and leads the team with 18 ground balls. Luca Accardo (Fr) is 8 for 16 (50.0) this spring, as well.
• Parker Green (Sr) returns in goal for High Point after posting a 12.40 goals-against average and 47.6 save percentage last season. Heading into the weekend he has a 50.0 save percentage and an 11.49 GAA.
Navy vs. High Point - The Series
• Last year's game played on Feb. 26 at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis marked the inaugural meeting in the series.
• While Saturday's contest marks Navy's first trip to High Point, it will also be the Mids' first trip to the state of North Carolina since Feb. 25, 2011, when Navy dropped a 10-8 decision to #12 North Carolina in Chapel Hill.
Road Rules
• The Mids own a 231-180-4 (56.1) all-time record in true road games and a 15-13 (53.6) mark in neutral site games.
• Since the beginning of the 2004 campaign, Navy has won 57 of its 113 (50.4) true road contests.
• Navy has had a losing record on the road in 6 (2010-11-13-14-17-20) of the last 14 years. The Mids are 6-8 on the road under Joe Amplo in 4 seasons.
• Navy will play 7 games on the road this season - Feb. 11 at Hofstra (W, 13-12), Feb. 25 at High Point, March 21 at Villanova, March 25 at Holy Cross, April 7 at Loyola and April 28 at Bucknell in the regular-season finale.
• Navy has won road games against nationally-ranked opponents in each of the last 2 seasons. The Mids dealt #15 Loyola a 14-12 loss at Ridley Athletic Complex in Baltimore on April 17, 2021 and earned a 12-11 overtime victory against #6 Army at Michie Stadium in West Point on April 23, 2022.
• The 12-11 overtime win at #6 Army marked the highest-ranked team Navy has defeated overall and on the road since defeating #3 Yale in New Haven, Conn. on May 15, 2016, in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.

• Since 2000, Navy's defense has been ranked among the nation's top five 11 times, including #1 three times (2000-05-06). Last year, Navy held its foes to 10.13 goals per game and was ranked #12 in scoring defense.
• Navy enters the weekend ranked #6 in scoring defense, holding its opponents to 7.50 goals per game through 4 contests.
• Navy's defense has been stingy in the first half of games this year. The Mids have allowed a combined 7 goals in the first 30 minutes of action and a combined 3 goals in the opening quarter of its 4 games.
• The Mids have held 54 of their last 104 opponents (51.9) to single digits, including Mount St. Mary's (7), Queens (5) and Manhattan (6) this season.
• In the Joe Amplo era (2020-present), Navy has held 14 of its 33 foes to single digits, including 6 of the 15 opponents last spring. The Mids strung together three-consecutive wins in 2022, holding Mercer (5), Hofstra (6) and Manhattan (6) to single digits. • Dating back to 2003, Navy HAD won 45 straight games when holding its foes to 5 or fewer goals. That streak was snapped on March 26, 2011, by Colgate in a 5-4 win over the Mids. Navy has won 65 of its last 66 when achieving the feat, including a 7-0 mark under Joe Amplo (2-0 in 2020 / 2-0 in 2021, 2-0 in 2022, 1-0 in 2023).
• Navy's defense has given up double-figure goals 94 times in its last 233 games (2006-present), 96 times in the last 249 (2005-present) and 99 times in the last 267 games (2004-present).

• Navy has scored 7 or fewer goals in 44 of its last 143 contests, but only 6 times in the last 5 years - 2019 (Loyola, L, 18-5), 2020 (Lehigh, L, 14-6), 2021 (Lehigh, L, 13-7), 2022 (Lehigh, L, 11-7 / Loyola, L, 18-7) and 2023 (Manhattan, L, 6-5).
• The Mids averaged 11.80 goals among its 5 games in 2020, the highest scoring average by a Navy team since 2004 when it averaged 12.28 goals per game.
