ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The Navy intercollegiate sailing team kicked off the spring season on Saturday and Sunday when it traveled to St. Mary's City to compete in the Quad Team Race Scrimmage with host St. Mary's College, Georgetown and Old Dominion.
Navy had three teams competing throughout the weekend, as every available sailor rotated between the teams. After a warm week of practice, the Midshipmen faced very different conditions on Saturday. As temperatures hovered near freezing all day with cloudy skies, the races saw intermittent rain, snow and sleet with light, shifty winds, as Navy's teams found some success while recognizing areas of improvement.
Sunday's weather warmed under clearing skies, as winds built throughout the morning to settle in at 8-12 knots. Under these conditions, the Mids were able to learn and made progress, improving as the day went on.
"The Midshipmen showed that they have the capability to make some noise this season and learned what to work on right away to make gains," said head coach
Ian Burman.
No scores were kept for the event.
Navy is back on the water March 4-5 for three events: the George Washington Team Race in Washington, D.C.; the Old Dominion Spring Women's Team Race in Norfolk, Va.; and the Tom Noble Open Team Race in Chestertown, Md.
