Navy Golf to Close Week at Carpetbagger Classic

After opening the spring campaign earlier this week with an 11th-place finish at the Bash at the Beach in Myrtle Beach, S.C., the Navy men's golf team will head to nearby Urbana, Md. this weekend to compete in the Carpetbagger Classic. Co-hosted by Binghamton and Colgate, the two-day, 36-hole event will be held at the Worthington Manor Golf Club with a shotgun start set for 9:30 am on both Saturday and Sunday.

Tournament History
• The 2023 edition of the Carpetbagger Classic marks the third time the tournament will be held after the inaugural event was canceled due to pandemic.
• Fairleigh Dickinson (301-295=596) was crowned the 2021 champion, edging second-place Bucknell (299-302=601) by 5 strokes.
• Last year, Rhode Island dominated the field with its 7-over par 583 (291-292), topping second-place Robert Morris (294-302=596) by 13 strokes.
• URI fifth-year golfer Brandon Gillis (69-74=143) returns as the 2022 individual medalist, alongside Fairleigh Dickinson graduate student Jaime Julve (73-70=143)
• Julve (75-70=145) also tied Bucknell's Jack Gardner (72-73=145) as the 2021 individual medalist.

More on the Mids
• Team captain Keegan Shreves led the way in the Mids' 11th-place finish at the 18-team Bash at the Beach this past Monday and Tuesday.
• Navy opened the tournament in 16th, but used a 2-under par 282 in the second round to move into 11th where it would stay. The Mids finished the event with a 32-over par 884 (302-282-300).
• Shreves (77-67-71=215) earned a top-20 finish behind a strong second-round performance that saw him card a 4-under par 67. He followed up by shooting par in the final round to move from 26th into 19th in the final standings.
• Just a stroke behind Shreves was Jack Tarzy, who tied for 25th with a 3-over par 216. Tarzy, who made his first-collegiate tournament appearance, also shot a 67 in the second round and had climbed to 16th in the standings. The newcomer, however, fell out of the top 20 after closing out the two-day tourney with a 3-over par 74.
• Chip Deegan opened the tournament with the a team-low 1-over par 72, but fell back over the course of the next two rounds. The rookie tallied marks of 74 and 78 to finish 58th with an 11-over par 224.
• Benjamin Valdez and Noah Nuez rounded out play for the Mids with Valdez placing 85th with an 18-over par 231 (78-76-77), while Nuez finished 101st with a 24-over par 237 (84-74-79).
