Navy Doubles Teams Advance to Semis at National Championship

Navy is sending both ot its squash doubles teams to the semifinals of the 2023 U.S. Intercollegiate Doubles Championship after the tandems of Millen Randell (Sr / Chicago, Ill.) and Henry Sparkman (Jr / Darien, Conn.), along with Lucas Spiro (So / Buffalo, N.Y.) and Alexander Orr (Fr / Haverford, Pa.) each captured a pair of wins on Saturday at the Arlen Specter US Squash Center in Philadelphia.

Randell and Sparkman, who have swept all three doubles teams they have faced in the tournament, began the day with an 11-4, 11-2, 11-5 victory over Amherst's Rholi Bathija and Nathaniel Mosse. They went on to score an 11-4, 11-8, 11-6 win over Asher Leavy and Pierce Henderson of Williams in the quarterfinals.

Meanwhile, after surviving a five-game thriller in their opener on Friday, Spiro and Orr also earned 3-0 victories against both opponents on Saturday. The Navy duo earned an 11-5, 11-7, 11-9 win against Columbia's Chaitanya Shah and Alex Yuzpe in the round of 16 before taking down brothers Tate and Tobey Suratt of Hamilton College, 11-8, 11-6, 11-3 in the quarters.

Both Navy doubles teams will play their respective semifinal matches at 10:00 am on Sunday. Randell and Sparkman will battle Yale's Merrit Wurts and Taylor Clayton on court 1, while Spiro and Orr will take on Griffin Manley and Dylan Deverill of Western Ontario on court 2. Wurts and Clayton played in the semifinals a year ago only to lose to teammates and eventual National Champions Maxwell Orr and Naddav Raziel in five games.

Navy's lone competitor in the College Squash Association National Collegiate Individual Championship, Matt Wang (So / Malvern, Pa.) bowed out of the double-elimination competition on Saturday after dropping a five-game heartbreaker to 13th-seeded Luis Alejandro Moncada Gonzalez of St. Lawrence in the consolation semifinals. Wang opened up a 2-0 advantage with mirroring 12-10 wins, but Gonzalez battled back to win the final three games 11-6, 11-9, 11-8.
