Crimson retained the Cup over the Mids and Penn Quakers

PHILADELPHIA – Racing for the Adams Cup for the 85th time in the trophy's existence, the No. 7 Harvard Crimson will take the cup back home to Boston after a successful showing versus the No. 14 Penn Quakers and No. 17 Navy Midshipmen on Saturday. Competing over a five-race slate on the Schuylkill River, the Navy heavyweight rowing team turned in three runner-up results in its penultimate regular season race.

A two-boat fifth varsity eight competition between Navy and Harvard kicked off Saturday's meet. Tight over the entire 2,000-meter race, the Crimson held off the Mids' late push and collected a 5:59.0 to 6:01.6 decision at the finish line.

The third race of the competition showcased the first varsities from the three rival schools battling it out for Adams Cup. Harvard illustrated why it's ranked seventh in this week's national poll and captured the hardware with a 5:36.5 effort. Penn was exactly three seconds back in second place at 5:39.5, while Navy finished in third at 5:45.9.

The second varsity eights hit the water next and action played out in a similar fashion to its brethren in the first boat as the final standings went Harvard, Penn and Navy. The Crimson were victorious with a 5:41.7 time, five seconds ahead of the Quakers at 5:46.7, who were just under five seconds ahead of the Mids at 5:51.4.

"Our team is learning each week and has our best racing still in front of us," remarked Rob Friedrich, the Tom & Candy Knudson Director of Navy Rowing. "We are ready to get back to work and make up ground on our competition."
