Intercollegiate Sailing Finishes Third at America Trophy

Arrigan Memorial Trophy Unable to be Raced Due to Lack of Wind

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy intercollegiate sailing team closed out the regular season this weekend with two events away from Annapolis, but only one of those regattas was able to be completed.

With the MAISA Fleet Race Championship up for grabs, the America Trophy was hosted this year by Old Dominion in Norfolk, Va. On the first day, a few races were completed in the morning before the wind died and the fleet of 18 teams waited on shore for most of the afternoon, with a late sea breeze allowing for more racing before sunset, as a total of seven races per division were completed on the first day. Sunday saw a puffy and shifty southeasterly wind, as five more races per division were completed before storms forced an early end to the regatta.

Navy, like all the teams at the America Trophy, had a hard time staying consistent in the volatile conditions, but the team did a good job of taking advantage of opportunities to post top finishes and avoiding disaster when the bad brakes came. In the end, the Midshipmen finished third overall, as senior Gavin McJones and freshman Ellie Alex came in sixth in the "A" division while freshman Nathan Smith and sophomore Ryan Wahba took home a narrow victory in the "B" division.

Hosted by Georgetown in Washington, D.C., the Arrigan Memorial Trophy was scheduled to take place on the Potomac River on Saturday afternoon with six boats each from Navy, St. Mary's and Georgetown, but a lack of wind prevented any races from being completed, producing no scoring.
