BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Coming off of an exhilarating come-from-behind victory at the 2023 Patriot League Championship regatta, last Friday May 12, the Navy women's rowing team was honored with seven All-Patriot League selections on Thursday. Four student-athletes earned nods on the first team, while three more were named to the second team.
Midshipmen announced by the league office on the All-Patriot League First Team were:
Lauren Day (Jr., Seattle, Wash.),
Tenlea Radack (So., Washington, D.C.),
Brienna Voss (Jr., Portland, Ore.) and coxswain
Maeve Swick (Jr., Annapolis, Md.). The trio of
Dani Baldwin (Jr., Lake Elmo, Minn.),
Anna Freihofer (Jr., Hebron, Ky.) and
Noelle de Vente (So., Greenville, N.C.) were honored on the All-Patriot League Second Team.
All seven of the all-league honorees are members of the Mids' victorious Patriot League first varsity eight crew that clinched the league championship for the program with a stunning final sprint that passed the Boston University Terriers and won by a significant 3.548-second gap. After Navy's V4 and 2V8 boats both finished runner-up to Boston Univ. in the initial two contests of the league regatta, the stage was set for a winner-take-all V8 grand final. Trailing the Terriers after the opening 500-meter sprintout, the Mids kept contact with their closest rival throughout the next 1,000 meters and geared up for a final 500 for the record books. Still chasing Boston University with 400 meters to go, Navy ratcheted up its stroke rate and quickly drew even before pulling away from the Terriers down the stretch and crossing the finish line with a victorious time of 6:36.892.
By winning the varsity eight race, Navy also claimed the 2023 Patriot League Boat of the Year distinction for the seventh time in program history, while head coach
Joe Schlosberg was named 2023 Patriot League Coach of the Year for the fourth time since taking the reins of the program in August of 2015.
Day is now a three-time honoree as she garnered spots on the All-Patriot League Second Team in 2021 and 2022 for her efforts with the Mids' first varsity eight crew. A young team overall, the other six honorees in this year's announcement are all first time recipients.
The All-League teams are based on the team's finish in the Varsity Eight Grand Final from the Patriot League Rowing Championship, which was held on Friday, May 12 on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass.
As a result of their league title, the Mids' season will continue next week at the 2023 NCAA Division I Rowing Championship in Cherry Hill, N.J. from May 26 through 28. The championship field is composed of 22 teams with 11 teams earning their way to the meet via automatic bids and the remaining 11 slots being filled by at-large selections. Among the 22 teams in the 2023 field, Navy is seeded 20th in the first varsity eight field, 21st in the second varsity eight competition and 19th in the varsity four discipline.
This will be the Mids' eighth trip to the NCAA Championships as the program previously qualified for and competed at the national regatta in 2013, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2021.
