Brown, Emlemdi Selected as 2023 Sprint Football Team Captains

Liam Brown will serve as the offensive captain, while Nadir Emlemdi will captain the defense.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Navy sprint football head coach Major Alfonso Meidus, USMC announced that rising seniors Liam Brown (Wantagh, N.Y.) and Nadir Emlemdi (Cincinnati, Ohio) will be team captains for the 2023 campaign. Brown will serve as the offensive captain, while Emlemdi will captain the defense.

The duo both earned First Team All-Collegiate Sprint Football League (CSF) last season, helping Navy complete its second straight undefeated season. Navy posted a win over Army at home to claim the 2022 CSFL Championship. The win gave Navy its 39th conference championship and 32nd outright title. It was the second consecutive CSFL Championship for the Midshipmen. The Mids closed out the season a perfect 8-0, including a 3-0 mark in the South Division. It is the 27th time that Navy has gone unbeaten during the season.

"It's been an honor to be named captain of the sprint football team," Brown said. "I look up to my fellow teammates in all they do, so to have their belief to lead the team next year is truly humbling. We have a phenomenal group going into this season and a legacy to uphold and fulfill. I cannot wait to see the team rise to the occasion this year."

Brown has played in all 16 games in his Midshipmen career, making 15 starts in two full seasons (2020 season reduced to one game due to the coronavirus pandemic). The New York native has anchored an offensive line that has helped Navy amass 6,196 total yards of offense (387.3 yards per game) with 3,587 rushing yards (224.2) and 2,609 passing yards (163.1) in just over two full seasons. During Brown's time on the offensive line, the offense has tallied 71 total touchdowns, including 49 rushing scores and 22 TDs through the air.

"To be chosen by such an outstanding group of men is the greatest honor of my life," stated Emlemdi. "I am beyond excited to spend another season with my brothers and work hard to achieve our goals. Our culture is founded upon love and upholding our legacy, and, because of that, we will never fail."

Emlemdi is a two-year starter for Navy on defense, participating in 15 of a possible 16 games. He has registered 29 total tackles, including 18 solo stops. In his career, Emlemdi has registered four interceptions with seven pass breakups, while also adding a blocked kick. Additionally, the Cincinnati native has returned four punts for 39 total yards (9.8 yards per return). Emlemdi and the Navy defense have held opponents to just 136 total points (8.5 points per game) with three shutouts.
