Varsity 4 Boat Places Fifth for Heavyweights in IRA Championship Grand Final

WEST WINDSOR, N.J. -- The lone grand final contested among the heavyweight boats Saturday at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association National Championship on Lake Mercer in West Windsor, N.J., saw Navy's entry place fifth in the varsity four race.

First Varsity Eight
Navy posted a time of 6:24.338 to win the C/D semifinal of six boats by nearly three seconds.  The Mids trailed Drexel by 1.4 seconds after 500 meters, but had winnowed the deficit down to three-tenths of a second after an additional 500 meters. Navy then stood in first place by a little more than one second after 1500 meters before more than doubling that margin in the last quarter of the course.

Columbia placed second in the race with its time of 6:27.114 and Drexel crossed the finish line with a time of 6:27.176 to earn third place.

Each of those three boats qualified for the C final Sunday at 9 a.m.

Second Varsity Eight
Navy's second varsity eight boat also earned a spot in Sunday's C final with its second-place showing in Saturday's C/D semifinal of five boats. The Mids traversed the course in a time of 6:26.620 to join race-winner Wisconsin (6:25.646) and third-place boat La Salle (6:35.580) to advance to the C final tomorrow at 8:40 p.m.

Saturday's semifinal was a two-boat race from the start with the Badgers holding a slight lead at each of the 500-meter time checks.  The margin was 1.1 seconds after 500 meters, 1.5 seconds after 1,000 meters and one second after 1,500 meters.

Third Varsity Eight
Poor weather late in the day on Friday forced the cancellation of the third varsity eight repechage race.  The cancellation led to the boats being placed into semifinals based upon their heat results.  The Mids, who had finished in fourth place in their heat Friday, moved directly into the A/B six-boat semifinal Saturday.

Navy recorded a time of 6:52.683 to place sixth this morning with a time of 6:52.683.  The result sends the Mids into Sunday's petite final that will be rowed at 9:10 a.m.

Washington won the race in a time of 6:29.185.

Varsity Four
Additional casualties of Friday afternoon's weather were the semifinals of the varsity four races.  As a result, boats were placed into Saturday finals based upon how they had performed in the 31-boat time trials held Friday morning.

Navy had placed sixth in the time trials and was slated to compete in the A/B/C semifinals yesterday afternoon.  However, the reconfigured schedule sent the Mids directly into the six-boat grand final this morning.

The Mids improved their positioning by one spot from Friday to Saturday as the boat crossed the line in a time of 7:11.161 to finish in fifth place.

California won the title with its time of 7:04.781.
