Rising senior Henry Sparkman (Darien, Conn.) has been selected to serve as captain of the 2023-24 Navy squash team, head coach Tyler Osborne announced on Friday.

Sparkman has amassed a 36-22 record in two-plus seasons at Navy, including a 21-12 mark this past season primarily playing the No. 3 position. The three-year letter winner arrived in Annapolis in the midst of the pandemic and his rookie season was a near wash. Navy's only two matches during the 2020-21 campaign were against national power Virginia. The 2021-22 season saw sports as we know them bounce back and Sparkman turned in a 15-8 record, spending most of his time between the No. 4 and 5 spots on the ladder. He won his final four matches of the season, including posting a 3-0 mark at the College Squash Association Team Championship. He played a pivotal role in the Mids' second-round victory over Amherst, where with the match knotted at four wins apiece, he closed out the team victory with a five-game win over Abhimanyu Gupta. Navy went on to capture the Summers Division at the CSA Team Championship.

This past season, Sparkman opened the year by winning 12 of his first 13 matches. He went on to win two of his three matches at the CSA Team Championship, defeating Denison's Ibrahim Bekhiet in three games, as well as Wesleyan's Abhinav Gupta. Sparkman closed out the year competing at the U.S. Intercollegiate Doubles Championship alongside 2022-23 team captain Millen Randell (Chicago, Ill.). The tandem won its first four matches, including a 3-1 victory over Merrit Wurts and Taylor Clayton of Yale in the semifinals to punch their ticket into the championship match. Sparkman and Randell, however, would fall short against Western Ontario's Griffin Manley and Dylan Deverill, dropping a 3-0 decision in a highly-contested match.

As the lone senior, Sparkman will lead a young Navy squad which is expected to be comprised of one senior, two juniors, one sophomore and six freshmen.
