Swimming and Diving Teams Fall in Two-Day Meet to Notre Dame and Princeton

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The Navy swimming and diving teams dropped a pair of meets to Notre Dame and Princeton this weekend in South Bend, Ind.    The teams competed in 18 men's and women's events over the course of Friday and Saturday.

In the men's scoring, the No. 25 Mids (7-3) lost to No. 12 Notre Dame (6-0), 219-134, and to Princeton (6-1), 199-154.  The women's meet finished with Navy (5-3) falling 291-62 to the Irish (2-4) and 295-58 to the No. 24 Tigers (7-0).

"Congratulations to Princeton and Notre Dame," said Navy women's swimming head coach John Morrison.  "They each performed extremely well and provided our team a competitive two days.  Meets at this level really help our team learn and grow as we soon head into the championship portion of our season.  We were pleased with our approach and continuing to fight and improving throughout the two days.  No doubt the team and the coaches will use the lessons we learned to make us a better championship team."

"To be able to challenge ourselves against this level of competition from multiple teams is very beneficial for us at this time of the year," said Navy men's swimming head coach Bill Roberts.  "We had a number on in-season best times.  I'm really pleased with the way our team competed and continued to get back up on the blocks in each race.  Several had three or four swims in a session.  Among the highlights was the performance of our relay teams.  Each person on the relays stepped up and we were able to post some terrific times for this time of the year."

Winning an event for the Navy men's team were Juan Mora in the 100 breast (52.94), Michael Phillips in the 200 breast (1:58.49) and Jonah Harm in the 200 IM (46.55).

Placing second for the Mids were Richie Trentalange in the 100 breast (54.76), Finn Gelbach on the three-meter diving board (333.75), Ben Irwin in the 200 back (1:42.09) and both the 200 and 400 medley relay foursomes.

Luca Oliva had a pair of third-place showings as he claimed the bronze medal in the 1000 free (9:18.89) and 500 free (4:28.22) events.  Also finishing in third place in an event were Gavin Green in the 100 breast (55.31), Harm in the 50 free (20.01), Mora in the 200 breast (1:59.37) and Patrick Colwell in the 100 fly (47.32).

The Navy women's team posted a trio of fourth-place finishes during the meet.  Riley Gavigan did so in the 100 breast (1:02.67), as did Lauren Walsh in the 200 breast (2:15.14) and Caroline Irwin in the 100 fly (55.04).  Placing sixth in races were Anna Freyman in the 50 free (23.54), Izzy Olson on the three-meter diving board (240.55) and Mackenzie Kim in the one-meter event (256.70).

The Navy women's team will play host to James Madison on Jan. 20, while the Navy men's team is off from competition until competing at Columbia on Jan. 26.
