ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy intercollegiate sailing team competed in three events this past weekend, hosting the finals of the Women's Atlantic Coast Championship in Annapolis while also competing at the Nevins Trophy in Kings Point, N.Y., and the Washington College Fall Open in Chestertown, Md.
Â
One of the feature events of the fall season, the Women's Atlantic Coast Championship finals had the top 18 teams from September's first round to create a very deep and talented field. Racing on the Severn River in front of the Robert Crown Sailing Center, Saturday saw a light northwest wind that allowed for seven races per division before the breeze died out, while a few more races were held in a light southeasterly breeze at the end of the day, but dying wind and strong current ended the day after the ninth race.
Â
After Navy had a great first day to be among the leaders heading into the second day, Sunday opened with a delay waiting for wind but racing eventually began in a light southeast breeze. The wind shifted right and increased as the day progressed, as the Midshipmen struggled a bit on Sunday to drop to 10th overall by the close of racing. Seniors
Evie Blauvelt and
Maggie Schuler and sophomore
Mary Dwyer finished eighth in the "A" division while senior
Izzy Fadullon and juniors
Ava Farley and
Ellie Alex were 12th in the "B" division.
Â
The major open interconference regatta of the weekend, the Merchant Marine-hosted Nevins Trophy began in a windy northwesterly breeze that decreased a bit but still provided quality racing for the deep nation-wide field. Navy sailed well and stayed in the top group throughout the regatta, ending up fourth out of 18 teams. Sophomores
Henry Allgeier and
Fiona Cullen and freshman
Gregory Lesmerises-DeGraff finished fourth in the "A" division while freshman
Owen MacWilliams and senior
Ryan Wahba were fifth in the "B" division.
Â
Navy also had two teams competing in the field-of-13 Washington College Fall Open, where the wind was puffy and shifty on the Chester River with a fair amount of current making things interesting, as both Navy teams put up impressive performances. Winning both divisions and the overall regatta, the top Navy team had freshmen
Sean Trudell and
Jaden Lobbia in the "A" division and senior
Robert Ziman and junior
Alex Brenia in the "B" division. Navy's other team finished closely behind in third place, with sophomore
Logan Hayes and freshman
Molly Jethwa finishing fourth in the "A" division while senior
Linnea Forsberg and junior Ella Niehoff placing third in the "B" division.
Â
Next on Navy's schedule are the Open Atlantic Coast Championship finals in Boston, Mass., the Open Atlantic Coast Tournament in Newport, R.I., the Tom Curtis Regatta in Washington, D.C., and the Yale Women's Regatta in New Haven, Conn., with all four regattas taking place Oct. 19-20.
