ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy intercollegiate sailing team traveled to three away competitions this weekend, with warm weather and light winds at all locations, while also sending two Midshipmen to Chile as part of a combined effort with the Navy offshore sailing team.
Light winds hampered the Open Atlantic Coast Championship finals, hosted by Boston College, where Navy was one of 18 teams that had advanced through the first round two weeks prior for the opportunity to compete against the best teams in college sailing. The fleet ended up spending much more time waiting on the water for wind than it did sailing, as many races were started and then later abandoned while other races occurred in very light wind. In the end, only seven races were completed per division, as Navy wound up 11th overall. Juniors
Nathan Smith and
Ellie Alex came in eighth in the "A" division while fellow juniors
Jack Welburn and
Darby Graham came in 14th in the "B" division.
The best event of the weekend wind-wise proved to be the Yale Women's Regatta, where enough wind allowed two full days of racing and 13 races per division. Conditions were challenging, as Navy placed seventh in the 15-team field with senior
Evie Blauvelt and sophomore
Fiona Cullen finishing fourth in the "A" division and junior
Ava Farley and sophomore
Josie Sherry taking ninth in the "B" division.
With winds so light for the Tom Curtis Regatta at Georgetown, no races were completed and no official regatta occurred.
Internationally, the Navy sailing teams also competed at the Chilean Naval Academy, where a combined crew of three offshore sailors and two intercollegiate sailors raced in a three-day event. Winds were brisk for the multi-race series, but the Mids were unstoppable, besting the 22-boat fleet with first-place results in all races. Representing Navy were seniors Elliot Brandicourt and Ulysses Buzan, junior Colin Caraher and sophomores
George Carty and
Spencer Dominguez.
Navy will next compete at the MAISA Fall Women's Regatta in Norfolk, Va., and the War Memorial Regatta in St. Mary's City, Md., with both events taking place Oct. 26-27.
