Wang Wins Consolation Finals at CSA National Collegiate Individual Championship

Navy junior squash standout Matt Wang (Malvern, Pa.) earned a hard-fought five-game victory over Western's Daniel Deverill to win the consolation finals Sunday morning at the CSA National Collegiate Individual Championship. After dropping his opening match of the tournament on Friday morning at the Arlen Specter US Squash Center in Philadelphia, Wang closed out the tournament by winning his next three matches.

Wang drew a tough opening-round opponent in Cornell's Syan Singh. Not only would Singh defeat Wang in four games (11-3, 9-11, 11-6, 11-6), he went on to earn All-America honors by defeating Lewis Anderson of St. Lawrence in the finals to win the Molloy North division.

Meanwhile, Wang continued play in the double-elimination tournament where he would sweep Nimai Kini of Wesleyan (11-8, 11-6, 11-7) and Mero Elmarassy of MIT (11-6, 11-7, 11-7) in back-to-back matches. Wang and Deverill played a spectacular consolation finals match with Wang taking the opening game 13-11. The two would trade wins until the fifth when Wang put the finishing touches on his last match of the season by way of an 11-8 victory.

Meanwhile, team captain Henry Sparkman (Sr / Darien, Conn.) and Tighe Mullarkey (Fr, So / Locust Valley, N.Y.), along with Lucas Spiro (Jr / Buffalo, N.Y.) and Alexander Orr (So / Haverford, Pa.) represented the Mids at the 2024 U.S. Intercollegiate Doubles Championship also played at the Arlen Specter US Squash Center. Spiro and Orr found themselves in an early 2-0 deficit against the Middlebury team of Julian Sandoval and Will Lichstein. However, the Navy duo won back-to-back matches by an 11-6 score to force a fifth game. Middlebury would take the victory, edging Spiro and Orr 11-9 in the fifth.

Sparkman and Mullarkey, pairing up for the first time in the doubles championship, earned a 3-0 sweep (11-7, 11-5, 11-5) against Middlebury's Theo Kogan and Gabe Thin in the round of 32. The Navy pair, however, would be eliminated in the next round, dropping a four-game match (5-11, 11-7, 11-5, 12-10) to Yale's Maxwell Orr and Nikhil Ismail.
