Women’s Rugby Set to Compete in Tropical 7s

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy women's rugby team will travel to Tampa, Fla., to participate in the seventh annual Tropical 7s tournament this Friday and Saturday.
 
The Mids will compete in the women's senior bracket, which features eight teams separated into two divisions. Navy will face the Chicago Lions (4:20 p.m.), Faith Rugby Family (6:20 p.m.) and MacDowell Rugby (8 p.m.) in the pool B division on Friday to determine seeding for the playoffs.
 
The playoffs will begin at 2 p.m. on Saturday. Fans can visit NavySports.com for updates on playoff seeding and schedules following the conclusion of pool play on Friday night. Updated standings and schedules can also be found HERE.
 
All matches will be live-streamed through GOLS' online platform. The broadcasts will provide an immersive experience with excellent camera angles and live play-by-play commentary.

The Mids began their 7s season in a three-team tournament against Army and the Royal Military College of Canada last Saturday in West Point, N.Y.
 
Navy's No. 1 team won both of its matches, defeating Royal Military College of Canada's No. 1 (19-10) and No. 2 (34-0) teams. Navy's No. 3 team lost its lone match to Army's No. 2 team by a score of 27-0. The remainder of the tournament was canceled due to weather.

Navy's No. 1 team took the pitch first to face the No. 1 team from the Royal Military College of Canada.
 
Mia Young scored the first try of the 2024 7s season 1:56 into the match to give the Mids a 5-0 lead. Megan Leitz found the try zone in the fifth minute and a successful conversion kick from Abby Hershner extended Navy's lead to 12-0.
 
The Paladins cut their deficit to just two points midway through the second half. RMC scored a try in the eighth and 10th minutes to make the score, 12-10. The match ended in extended time after the Mids were awarded a penalty try to win the contest, 19-10.
 
Navy No. 1 vs. Royal Military College of Canada No. 2 (Win, 34-0)
Multiple freshmen played a huge role in the second match for the No. 1 team in its, 34-0, victory against RMC's No. 2 squad.
 
Navy took a 5-0 lead just 36 seconds into the game after freshman Alexis Rohrbach ran into the try zone. Leitz scored her second try of the tournament at the 2:30 mark. Hershner then nailed the ensuing conversion kick to make the score, 12-0. Team captain Charlotte d'Halluin extended Navy's lead to 17-0 after scoring a try in the fifth minute. Rohrbach recorded her second try of the contest just before the eighth minute. Hershner ended the first half with another conversion kick to give the Mids a 24-point advantage.
 
Freshmen Catherine O'Hara and Caroline Shegogue combined to add another 10 points in the second half by scoring a try in the eighth and 12th minutes, respectively.

Navy will return to the pitch to compete in the Emperor 7s on Sunday, April 14 in Princeton, N.J. A start time for the tournament is to be determined.
