ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Coming off a thrilling ride to its first Patriot League title, the Navy women's tennis team will play at defending national champion and No. 4-ranked North Carolina this weekend in the first round of the 2024 NCAA Tournament, it was announced Monday evening.
The match between the Midshipmen (24-6), winners of the Patriot League Tournament, and the Tar Heels (22-3), champions of the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament, will be played at 6 p.m. on Friday, May 3 at the Chewning Tennis Center in Chapel Hill, N.C.
The other first round match in Chapel Hill features Wisconsin (18-6) playing William & Mary (18-5) at 3 p.m. The winners of those two matches will play Saturday, May 4 at 6 p.m. in the second round.
Navy is making its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament, just 15 years removed from becoming a varsity program, after capturing the 2024 Patriot League Championship on April 21 following marathon 4-3 wins over both Army and Boston University in consecutive days.
Navy has previously played North Carolina once before, falling by a 7-0 score to the Tar Heels on March 15, 2016 in Palmas del Mar, Puerto Rico.
