FROSTBURG, Md. – The Navy's women's rugby team (1-1) picked up its first victory of the season on the road against Frostburg State (1-1), 59-5, on Saturday afternoon. The 54-point victory marks the largest margin of victory in program history.
The Mids offense was alive and well Sunday afternoon with six first half tries and nine overall. Navy's 59 total points ranks second most in a match in program history and nine tries is tied for second most in a match. The team also set a program record for the most conversion kicks in a match (7).
"The team had a good week of practice and it was reflected in their performance today. We were a little tense with the ball in the first 10 minutes or so but, once we settled in we had a lot of "go forward ball" in the attack and were tough to defend," stated head coach Murph McCarthy. "Our captains, Maggie Geiger and Miracle Haynes, did a good job setting the tone. Ashley Spencer stood out in the forwards as well. Katherine O'Hara was busy with the ball and in defense for the backs."
Junior forward Spencer started the scoring run for the Midshipmen as she registered her one of three tries in the 14th minute. Navy's offense pushed the attack inside the Bobcats 22-meter zone, persistent passing moved the ball to the five-meter zone where Spencer slammed it in. The Blythewood, S.C. native found the try zone in the 46th and 72nd minute marks to become the third Mid to score three tries in a match. Her 15-point performance is tied for second in program history for all-time points in a match.
Alexis Rohrbach recorded her first-career try in 15's action. A Frostburg turnover inside its own 22-meter zone, a mid located Rohrbach open on the left side of the attack and able to walk into the try zone to give Navy a 14-0 lead.
Senior captain Geiger scored her first-career try displaying power running as she rolled her way through five Bobcat defenders in the 23rd minute mark for the Mids third try in a span of nine minutes controlling the ball in the first half.
Navy scored three more tries in the final nine minutes of the first half with two tries from Meagan Alvarez and a try from Mia Young.
Alvarez set a pair of individual program records for the most points in a match (20) and most conversion kicks in a match (5).
Laryssa Payne made her collegiate debut and got in on the Mids scoring party as she registered her first-career try in the 57th minute.
Frostburg would avoid a shutout scoring its lone try of the match in the 77th minute mark.
