WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Navy gymnastics team rounded out its first weekend of competition for the 2025 season with eight Midshipmen in action in the event finals of the West Point Open on Saturday night. After Navy placed third in the team meet on Friday night, the lights shown on the Mids in an individual capacity with medals on the line at the Holleder Center.
Isaiah Drake (Sr., Los Angeles, Calif.) led Navy's contingent as he won the vault and high bar finals, in addition to finishing runner-up for his floor exercise routine. As a program, Navy gymnasts earned eight different podium results for placing top-six.
Drake's Saturday night began on the floor exercise as Navy's only competitor in the respective event final. He executed his 4.8-level routine with 8.65 accuracy for a grand total of 13.45 points that ranked second behind Penn State's Michael Artlip, who won with a 13.8 score.
The talented senior collected his first event win courtesy of well-executed vault. Drake's 4.8-level vault was graded out with a 9.25 execution score for a 14.05 score that edged out Penn State's Kellen Ryan by 0.05 points.
Brian Solomon (So., Lynnfield, Mass.) grabbed one of the top-six podium spots with a score of 13.45, that ranked fifth overall in the field of eight.
Riley Rose (Sr., Las Vegas, Nev.) competed in the vault finals on Saturday, though he just missed the podium with a seventh-place score of 12.85.
Drake's rounded out his busy night of competition with a significant victory on the high bar as he out-scored Army's Tyson Phelps by 0.25 points, 13.4 to 13.15. His 13.4 score came from a 4.5 start value and an 8.9 execution grade.
Vishal Mandava (Sr., Cypress, Texas) made his way onto the final step of the podium with a 12.7 score to finish in sixth place.
Daniel Gurevich (So., Frisco, Texas) completed his West Point Open experience with a strong outing on the pommel horse that netted him a fifth-place result via his 12.75 score. He was joined in the pommel horse field by
Jonah Soltz (Fr., Tacoma, Wash.), who tied for sixth place with Army's Jake Prabhakaran as both gymnasts recorded 12.6 efforts.
Soltz repeated that top-six outcome later in the meet as he scored 12.5 points on the parallel bars to finish sixth overall.
William Champagne (Sr., Douglas, Mass.) was one spot off the podium with a 11.15 on Saturday night.
The final Midshipman in action at the West Point Open event finals was
Aaron Stein (Jr., Houston, Texas). Continuing his comeback after missing the entire 2024 season, Stein earned a score of 12.15 for his rings routine that fell just short of making the podium.
Navy will head home from this weekend of action in New York and turn its attention to the 2025 Navy Open. The multi-team home opener for the Mids is set for a 2 p.m. first touch at the Halsey Fieldhouse Gymnastics Facility next Saturday, January 18.
