Weekly Rewind
Playing its first home matches in nearly 8 weeks, Navy had a tough time closing out its contests this weekend. The Mids dropped back-to-back 5-4 decision last Friday and Saturday against #17 Amherst (6-3) and #20 Middlebury (6-2) before losing a 7-2 match against #11 Williams (5-3) on Sunday.
• Well-played and exciting matches, the Amherst and Middlebury competitions were not clinched until the final match of the day
• Four of the nine matches against Amherst went a full five games, while two others went four ... the Mids were 1-3 in the five-game matches and 1-1 in the four-game bouts
• Second-year player Matthew Kang found himself in a 2-0 deficit against his Amherst foe, but battled his way back to defeat Flynn Venmore at #4 in five games (9-11, 10-12, 12-10, 11-6, 13-11)
• The Middlebury match was equally competitive with five matches going four or five games, including the final match of the day in which Middlebury's Alexis Ballo won in five to clinch the team victory
• Alexander Orr added his name to the program's 50-win list with his 3-1 victory over Middlebury's Kian Kardestuncer (11-8, 5-11, 14-12, 11-5) ... Orr is now 50-28 in his three years
• Five of the nine matches against Williams went extra games, but Navy's 1-2 punch of Matt Wang and Wenqing Tang captured the Mids' lone wins against the Ephs
• Wang and Tang were sensational all weekend as both players went 3-0 for Navy
• Tang leads the team with his 15-2 record this season, while Wang stands 9-6
• With his 3 wins over the weekend, Wang is now 64-47 over his four seasons and is tied for 20th (alongside Randy Beck, 2013-17) on the Mids' all-time wins list ... he is one win shy of becoming just the 20th player in school history with 65 wins and six wins shy of becoming one of only 12 players to reach 70 wins
• Six of the nine players on the ladder earned at least one win over the weekend (Wang, 3-0 / Tang, 3-0 / Orr, 1-2 / Kang, 1-2 / Mullarkey, 1-2, Tierney Jr., 1-2)
