Star on the Line in Annual Army-Navy Wrestling Dual

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – A Star will be on the line when the Navy wrestling team (5-3, 4-0 EIWA) goes head-to-head against 24th-ranked Army (6-3, 3-2 EIWA) on Sunday afternoon at West Point, N.Y. Sunday's match is part of the annual Army-Navy Star Series presented by USAA. The Mids and Black Knights will take the mat at 4 p.m. and will be streamed on FloWrestling (subscription).

2024-25 Army-Navy Star Series

• Army leads the 2024-25 Star Game series, 9-7. Navy has won the previous four Stars (all on Feb. 1) with victories from gymnastics (314.60-311.90), rifle (5,878-5,839), men's and women's indoor track & field (99-82, 94-87).

• Three Stars are up for grabs this weekend. Prior to the Wrestling Star, the Men's and Women's basketball Star game takes place on Saturday at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. at Alumni Hall in Annapolis.

Army-Navy Wrestling Series

• The Mids lead the all-time series, 52-11-5.

• Navy's 52 victories against Army are the third-most against team behind Lehigh and Maryland (57).

• Sunday's match will mark the 69th-consecutive season the Mids and Black Knights face each other in a dual.

• Navy is 22-7-3 when wrestling in West Point. The Mids last lost to Army in West Point back in 2019, 22-10.

• The Black Knights won last season's meeting by a score of 18-17. Army jumped out to a 10-0 lead winning the first three bouts.

Last Time Out: At Bucknell

• The Midshipmen stays hot winning its fourth-straight dual when it knocked off Bucknell on Jan. 31 at Davis Gym in Lewisburg, Pa., 27-9. The Mids never trailed in the dual winning seven of the 10 bouts and earned bonus points in three matches.

• Freshman Nick Treaster kicked the dual off at 125 pounds with a shutout tech fall victory over Chris Nucifora, 15-0. Treaster got out to a 7-0 lead with a takedown and a full set of back points in the opening period.

• Navy went on a run winning five-straight bouts at 141, 149, 157, 165 and 174 pounds.

• It was a top 20 showdown at 141 pounds as senior team captain and seventh-ranked Josh Koderhandt went head-to-head against 20th-ranked Dylan Chappell. Followed by a scoreless first stanza, Koderhandt opened the scoring in the second period with an early escape, a takedown and a four point near fall for an 8-0 lead. He added seven more points in the third period to walk away with a 15-1 victory. 

• Freshman Dylan Elmore continues his impressive freshman campaign with an upset victory over 21st-ranked Noah Mulvaney, 4-3. A double leg takedown from Elmore in the first period was the only takedown of the bout.

• Thirteenth-ranked Danny Wask kept Navy's hot streak going when he knocked off 18th-ranked Myles Takats, 4-2. Wask recorded a much-needed takedown in the third period to secure the match and added to his team leading seventh ranked victory.

Navy Team Notes

125 - Freshman Nick Treaster is 2-2 in his last four starts including winning his last bout against Bucknell in a tech fall fashion. The Mids are 3-5 overall at 125 pounds with two of the victories resulting in bonus points.

133 - Junior Brendan Ferretti has made seven-consecutive starts for the Midshipmen at 133 pounds. Ferretti has Navy's lone victory at 133 pounds in dual competition with a fall over Lehigh's Logan Wadle.

141 - Josh Koderhndt started in all eight duals for the Mids and enters as the top ranked Midshipmen in the latest InterMat rankings at No. 7 in his respective weight class. Navy's only weight class without a loss in dual meets with an 8-0 record and winning four by bonus points.

149 - Kaemen Smith is one of three Midshipmen to start every dual in a single weight class (Koderhandt at 141 and Danny Wask at 174). He holds a 3-5 dual record and won his last two dual meets. With a victory on Sunday, Smith would reach 40 career wins and his 10th career dual victory. 

157 - Sophomore Jonathan Ley is one of three wrestlers (Koderhandt and Danny Wask) to win at least five dual victories as he sits 5-1 in dual meets. Ley's 10 victories this season already surpasses his freshman mark (9).

165 - Freshman Dylan Elmore has started the last four duals and joins Koderhandt as the only wrestlers to win every dual match. Elmore earned his first ranked victory when he knocked off 21st-ranked Noah Mulvaney from Bucknell, 4-3. Before Elmore took over as the starter, the Mids were 2-2 at 165 pounds.

174 - Danny Wask is one of three wrestlers to start every dual in the same weight class (Koderhandt and Smith). Wask has won seven-consecutive dual meets sitting at 7-1 overall, tying his freshman campaign total. Wask leads the team with seven ranked victories. Wask enters the InterMat rankings at No. 13 in his respective weight class.

184 - The Midshipmen enter Friday night with a 2-6 dual record at 184 pounds. Sophomore Daniel Williams made the most appearances with six starts and boasts a 2-4 record. He holds a 3-4 overall dual record as he wrestled up to 197 pounds in the dual against American.

197 - Navy is 3-3 in its last six duals at 197 pounds led by freshman and 33rd-ranked Payton Thomas making seven starts with a 3-4 dual record. Thomas is 3-5 overall in duals as he wrestled up a weight class (285) against American.

285 - After dropping its first six dual matches at 285 pounds, the Midshipmen won back-to-back dual matches with victories from Ben Farabaugh and Jacob Lucas. Lucas made his season debut in the most recent match against Bucknell where he earned a medical injury victory in the second period.

Scouting Army

• Army enters the dual with a 6-3 record and is 3-2 against Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) foes. The Black Knights enters the weekend ranked 24th in the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) rankings.

• Army has earned wins over Gardner-Webb (35-6), Purdue (20-19), Buffalo (37-2), Morgan State (43-6), Long Island (37-6) and American (34-4).

• The Black Knights dropped their last two bouts to EIWA opponents Bucknell (21-13) and Lehigh (27-10).

• Seven Army wrestlers were ranked in the latest InterMat rankings, led by No. 17 Gunner Flipowicz (165) and No. 17 Lucas Stoddard (285).

• Head coach Kevin Ward is in his 11th season in West Point. During his tenure with the Black Knights, he has amassed a 57-54 record.
