ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy women's rugby team begins its 7s season on Sunday when it takes part in the Frostbite 7s at Hempfield High School in Landisville, Pa.
Navy's top 7s squad will compete against Binghamton (9:20 a.m.), Stony Brook (11:20 a.m.) and Virginia (1:20 p.m.). Additionally, Navy's No. 2 team will face Binghamton (10:20 a.m.), Rochester (12:20 p.m.) and Colgate (2:20 p.m.).
Fall Season Recap
The Mids competed in 15s during the fall season and compiled an overall record of 4-5, which included a 2-5 mark against National Intercollegiate Rugby Association (NIRA) opponents.
Navy opened its season with a 40-7 loss to Queens University of Charlotte.
The Mids then scored nine tries, including a hat trick from Ashley Spencer, to post their first win of the fall against Frostburg State, 59-5.
Navy picked up its second victory of the year when it defeated Air Force, 71-8. The Mids set program records for the most points and most tries (11) in the match. Team captain Miracle Haynes recorded a career-best three tries as she was one of six Mids to score a try against the Falcons. Additionally, sophomore Mia Alvarez totaled 14 points in the match with a program-best seven conversion kicks.
Navy defeated Princeton, 24-19, a week later on the backs of a dominant first half performance that boosted the Mids to a 19-0 lead. It was the first NIRA and home victory of the season for the Mids.
Navy closed out its regular season with a 36-14 victory over Mount St. Mary's. Sophomore Meagan Alvarez led the Mids with a program-best 21 points on three tries and conversion kicks.
Alvarez and Haynes tied for first on the team with five tries during the fall season. Alvarez led the team in total points (52), booted 12 conversion kicks and had the team's only penalty kick of the season.
Mia Young led the squad with 13 conversion kicks.
