Chip Deegan (Jr / Newport Beach, Calif.) and
Jack Tarzy (Jr / Medford, N.J.) closed out The Hayt by pacing the Navy men's golf team with a 10-over par 226. The 15-team, 54-hole tournament was played at the Sawgrass Country Club in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. and featured 12 programs that are ranked in the top 100 of the CLIPPD men's team rankings, including three in the top 10. The Mids covered the tournament with a 54-over par 918 (311-297-310), their lowest team score among their three appearances at The Hayt (972 in 2022, 947 in 2017).
Deegan stood tall for the Mids in the opening two rounds, shooting a 4-over par 76 on the opening day and followed up with a 1-under par 71 in round two. He closed out the tournament on Tuesday with a 7-over par 79. Tarzy, meanwhile, had his strongest performance over the final 18 holes. After posting scores of 78 and 76 in the opening-two rounds, he close out the tournament by shooting par. The duo placed 60th on the final leader board.
Team captain
Benjamin Valdez (Sr / Stevenson Ranch, Calif.) placed 75th with a 15-over par 231 (77-76-78), followed by
James Devore (Fr / Porter, Texas) in 80th with a 19-over par 235 (80-74-81) and
Ed Scott (Fr / Lemont, Ill.) was 83rd with a 27-over par 243 (80-79-84).
Tournament Notes
• Fourth-ranked Texas (-18 / 290-274-282=846) was the only team to shoot under par in the final round, as the Longhorns shot a 6-under par 282 over the final 18 holes to jump past Alabama, Virginia and Duke to capture the team title. Duke, ranked 28th nationally, took second with an 11-over par 853 (283-280-290). Alabama, who held a 10-stroke advantage over Texas going into the final round, shot a 16-over par 304 on Tuesday to fall to third in the final standings (-6 / 279-275-304).
• This is the second time Texas has claimed the team title in its five appearances and the first since 2015. The Longhorns are among eighth teams who have now won the tournament title multiple times - Florida (5), North Florida (5), Arkansas (3), Oklahoma State (2), Alabama (2), South Carolina (2), Florida State (2), Texas (2).
• Two Texas golfers placed inside the top 5, including Luke Potter who claimed individual medalist honors with his 10-under par 206. He opened the tournament 1 under, but pushed up in the standings with a 6-under par in the second round before closing out with the low round of the day (-3) in the finale.
• North Carolina's David Ford, ranked #1 in the country, placed second with a 7-under par 209. He held the lead going into the final round, but finished the day with a 3-over par 75 to fall to second.
• There were 15 total players who finished the tournament under par.
Navy returns to action March 24-25 when it travels to Williamsburg, Va. to compete in the Golden Horseshoe Intercollegiate.
