OAK RIDGE, Tenn. – After Mother Nature dictated the action on Saturday with multiple delays and eventually the cancellation of one of the day's two sessions, it was business as usual on Sunday for the Navy women's rowing team at the 2025 Oak Ridge Cardinal Invite. The Mids opened the two-day event at Melton Lake on Saturday with four races against the North Carolina Tar Heels before coming back on Sunday for three-way action versus No. 18 Notre Dame and Wisconsin. At the conclusion of the opening weekend of racing of the Mids' 2025 season, a victory by their first varsity eight on Sunday highlighted their eight-race competition.
The weekend for Navy's first varsity eight began on Saturday afternoon with a one-on-one matchup versus North Carolina. The Tar Heels controlled the majority of the action over the 2,000-meter course and took the victory over the Mids, 6:29.830 to 6:43.006. Getting another chance to take to the waters of Melton Lake on Sunday morning, Navy's V8 made the most of the opportunity and shaved over 15 seconds off its time to post a 6:27.175 result. Racing against Notre Dame and Wisconsin, Navy was the class of the field and earned the victory as the Fighting Irish clocked in at 6:30.062, while the Badgers were 15 seconds behind the Mids at 6:42.853.
Navy's second varsity eight was also in action over two sessions on the weekend. On Saturday in a head-to-head race against UNC, the Mids kept in contact with the Tar Heels for over half the piece before UNC pulled away for the 7.462-second victory, 6:43.825 to 6:51.287. Approximately 18 hours later on Sunday morning, the Mids and Fighting Irish went one-on-one as the Badgers' entry was scratched. While Navy slashed 2.752 seconds off its original time, Notre Dame came away with the victory, 6:37.221 to 6:48.535.
Turning its attention to small boat action, Navy's first and second varsity four crews raced twice this weekend. The Mids' V4 improved its time over the invitational meet as it posted a time of 7:40.546 in Saturday's race versus UNC; the Tar Heels won with a 7:23.380 time. On Sunday morning, the Mids completed the 2,000-meter contest 3.628 seconds faster with a 7:36.918 result. Notre Dame and Wisconsin finished first and second ahead of Navy with respective times of 7:16.135 and 7:27.410. The Mids' 2V4 also progressed throughout its series of races as it posted an original time of 8:05.241 in session one before finishing its time in eastern Tennessee with a 7:47.502 mark on Sunday morning. In both contests, Navy finished third of three crews, as UNC 2V4 and 3V4 crossed ahead of it on Saturday before Notre Dame and UNC 3V4 did the same on Sunday.
"We had a really great week of training leading up to this competition," remarked head coach
Joe Schlosberg. "Unfortunately, we came out a little flat against a fast North Carolina team on Saturday. Coming off of that, we made some adjustments going into Sunday and we were able to tighten up some margins. The Varsity 8 put together a great race finishing out ahead of Notre Dame and Wisconsin.
"The weather, the conditions and the multiple delays affected all of the teams there. I was really pleased with how we handled each situation and look forward to getting back to work this week at home."Â
Navy will be away from collegiate competition next weekend before taking on regional foes at the 2025 Doc Hosea Invitational in Cherry Hill, N.J. on Saturday, March 29.
