LANDISVILLE, Pa. – The Navy women's rugby team opened its 7s season on Sunday by winning all four of its matches at the Frostbite 7s in Landisville, Pa. The Mids defeated Binghamton 20-5 in their first match of the day before shutting out Virginia 44-0, Stony Brook 31-0 and West Virginia 24-0.
"It was a great day and I was very pleased with how the team performed today," said head coach Murph McCarthy. "We still have some work with some of our younger athletes who are starting to find their way with the 7s game. Overall, it was a good start to the spring."
Match One: Navy 20, Binghamton 5
Catherine O'Hara scored on two tries in the first five minutes to give Navy the early 10-0 lead.
Sophomore Mia Young reached the try zone 47 seconds into the second half, while Ella Callahan scored Navy's last try in the 14th minute.
The Bearcats avoided the shutout by scoring a try in the 15th minute.
Match Two: Navy 44, Virginia 0
The Mids put together their highest-scoring match of the day in a 44-0 win over Virginia where Navy recorded nine tries.
Young, O'Hara, Ashley Spencer and Lara Olmstead each ran in two tries in Navy's winning effort.
Meanwhile, Meagan Leitz recorded her first try of the day just over three minutes into the match.
Match Three: Navy 31, Stony Brook 0
After a slow start in the first half, the Mids' offense came alive over the final seven minutes of action, scoring three tries and converting three conversion kicks to defeat Stony Brook 31-0.
Young led the team with 11 points, as she booted two conversion kicks and ran in her fourth try on the day.
Callahan scored the Mids' only try in the first half in the third minute.
Caroline Shegogue and Hannah Brink helped spark the Mids in the second half by scoring their first tries on the day.
Match Four: Navy 24, West Virginia 0
Navy concluded the day by recording its third-consecutive shutout with a 24-0 win over West Virginia
O'Hara scored her fourth try of the day just under four minutes into the match, while Young made the conversion kick to give the Mids a 7-0 lead.
Meagan Alvarez, the team's leading scorer in the fall (52), scored her first try just 90 seconds into the second half, while Hannah Brink, Alexis Rohrbach and Rose Rode also scored their first tries to close out the day.
The Mids will be back in action in two weeks when they play host to the Navy 7s on Sunday, March 23 at the Prusmack Rugby Center in Annapolis, Md.
