ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Finishing runner-up, the Navy intercollegiate sailing team closed out the regular season this past weekend by competing for the America Trophy at the MAISA Open Fleet Race Championship in Ithaca, N.Y.
Hosted by Cornell, the event's fleet was composed of the top 18 teams in the conference. Light winds on the first day only allowed for one race to be completed per division, so the event was ultimately decided in a long day of racing on Sunday.
Navy stayed in a tight battle at the top of the leaderboard all day, claiming and relinquishing the lead multiple times. In the end, Georgetown came on too strong and the Midshipmen wound up second overall, with the runner-up finish earning Navy an automatic berth at the ICSA Open Fleet Race National Championship on May 27-30 in St. Mary's City, Md.
Nathan Smith,
Ryan Wahba and
Ellie Alex finished fourth in the "A" division while
Jack Welburn,
Henry Allgeier,
Darby Graham and
Fiona Cullen won the "B" division.
Up next for Navy is the ICSA Team Race Championship, taking place Thursday-Saturday in Providence, R.I., and the Arrigan Memorial Trophy on Saturday and Sunday in Washington, D.C.
