ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy intercollegiate sailing team traveled to Providence, R.I., this weekend to compete in the 2025 ICSA Open Team Race Championship, finishing ninth in the national field.
Hosted by Brown University, the national championship saw moderate sea breeze conditions and a very deep field to set up fantastic racing. In the 16-team round-robin, Navy was engaged in very tight back-and-forth races that came down to the wire constantly. The Midshipmen kept fighting and sailed well, posting a winning 8-7 record at the end of the round to land in a three-way tie for seventh.
A sail-off round then occurred between Navy, Boston College and Tulane to determine the final 2 teams for the gold-8 round. Boston College beat Tulane in the first race and Navy was up against Tulane next. Unfortunately, the Mids committed a pair of penalties at the start of the race and never recovered after that. One race remained against BC to stay alive, with the race being tight the whole way around the course as the teams traded the lead back and forth. Navy was able to squeak by right at the end to finish with a 2-3-5 winning combination.
As the three-way tie remained and only one sail-off round was allowed, the tiebreak went to total points when the tied teams met and Navy wound up on the outside by one point behind BC.
