PRINCETON, N.J. — The Navy women's rugby team (3-2, 3-2 National Intercollegiate Rugby Association) dominated Princeton (0-3, 0-3 NIRA) in record-breaking fashion on Saturday, defeating the Tigers 78-5 at Rickerson Field in Princeton, N.J. The 78 points are the most points scored in a game by the Mids in program history.
"We had a strong performance today and I was pleased with how well we played on both the attack and on defense," said Navy head coach
Murph McCarthy. "Our kicking game has improved as the season has progressed and it was great today."
Navy controlled possession and pace from the opening whistle when
Catherine O'Hara broke through in the seventh minute to give the Midshipmen an early lead.
Mia Young followed with the first of her three successful conversion kicks to set the tone.
Arica Spencer powered through defenders for a try in the 14th minute before
Caroline Shegogue and
Ashley Spencer each added to the Mids' lead. Navy went into halftime with a 28-0 lead as it scored four tries and made all four conversion kicks.
The second half proved even more punishing for Princeton.
Mia Young opened the scoring at the 40-minute mark with a sprint down the sideline.
Kyndall Wyngaard touched down for another try less than two minutes later.
Ella Callahan and
Lara Olmsted each added tries in quick succession to extend the lead to 52-0.
Princeton found its lone moment of success with a try from Myah Natorp in the 58th minute.
Cecilia Izquierdo responded almost immediately as she scored her first-collegiate try in the 64th minute to reignite Navy's momentum.
Meagan Alvarez scored and converted her own try in the 74th minute, while
Alexis Rohrbach added another just two minutes later. O'Hara closed the game the same way she started it, with a try, before she converted her own score to cap the record-breaking performance.
