BOSTON, Mass. – The Navy men's track and field team won three events to build a significant lead Saturday on the opening day of the Patriot League Indoor Championship at the Track & Tennis Center in Boston. The Mids totaled 74 points to take a 26.5-point advantage over second-place Army (47.5) into Sunday's final day.

Justin Mumford won the 5,000 meters,
Brian Schloeder won the pole vault and
Wyatt Shaw the long jump to help the Mids seize early control of the team standings.

"I felt really good about day one," Navy Director of Track & Field
Jamie Cook said. "
We qualified a lot of people in the track events, which is the objective on the first day. Tomorrow is a new day and (we will) see where we are."

Track Events
Mumford led Navy's distance dominance, winning the 5,000 meters in 14:02.61 to claim his first indoor league title. His time ranks ninth in school history. Teammate
Logan Flament placed third in a personal-best 14:05.73, followed by
Jackson Nguyen in fourth place at 14:10.66.

"The 5,000 meter was very tactical and Aaron (Lanzel) had his guys ready," remarked Cook.

In the 400 meters, team captain
Nathan Kent tied the eighth-fastest time in program history at 47.16 to advance to the finals.
David Walker secured the final qualifying spot in 48.43.

A trio of freshmen advanced to the 60-meter hurdles final.
Michael Wilkerson won his semifinal heat in a season-best 8.04 seconds, while
Jason Keiser (8.10) finished in fourth place and
Bobby Wind (8.32) placed seventh.

Marcel Jackson tied his career best and matched the fourth-fastest time in school history (6.82) to finish second in the 60 meters.
Jonah Johnson was third in 6.83 and
Tyler Yurich fourth in 6.84.

Kent, Yurich and Johnson claimed the final three qualifying spots in the 200 meters. Kent finished in sixth place in 21.34, Yurich posted a personal-best 21.43 to follow in seventh place and Johnson edged Lafayette's Alexander Caba, 21.474 to 21.477, for eighth place.

In the mile preliminaries, all four Navy runners advanced to the final.
Matt Newell led the group in fifth place (4:06.83), followed by
Dane Eike (4:07.26),
Patrick Gandini (4:07.49) and
James Partlow, who ran a season-best 4:07.64.

Aidan Eberhardt advanced to the 800-meter final with a seventh-place time of 1:51.79.

The 4x800-meter relay team of
Matthew Quispe, Partlow, Gandini and Eberhardt earned bronze in 7:33.19.

Field Events
Navy swept the pole vault, taking all three medals. Schloeder won with a career-best clearance of 5.25 meters (17 feet, 2.75 inches), tying the fourth-best mark in school history.
Gunnar Kimball finished in second place at 5.05 meters (16-06.75) and
Cooper Wakley placed third at 4.95 meters (16-02.75).

"Coach (Rory) Quiller did a great job getting the guys prepared in the pole vault event," said Cook. "Going 1-2-3 in an event is special. They did that along with competing in other events. That was very impressive to see."

Shaw captured the long jump title with a mark of 7.35 meters (24-01.50), giving Navy its first league champion in the event since 2022.
William Pierce finished in second place at 7.20 meters (23-07.50).

In the weight throw,
Aaron Spears placed fifth with a toss of 18.35 meters (60-02.50), while
Cooper Hydock finished in eighth place at 17.73 meters (58-2).

Heptathlon
Through five of seven events in the heptathlon,
Nick Simmons and
Jamison Scott sit in first and second place, respectively. Simmons has totaled 2,897 points, highlighted by winning the long jump at 7.07 meters (23-02.50). Scott has tallied 2,756 points, with his top performance coming in the shot put at 12.81 meters (42-0.50).

Jordan Wolverton stands fourth with 2,746 points after winning the high jump at 1.90 meters (6-2 3/4).

The championship concludes Sunday beginning at 11 a.m., with coverage starting at noon on ESPN+.
