Navy Looks to Re-Claim ECAC Crown on Saturday

Mids had won six straight ECAC Championships before finishing runner-up to Army in 2025

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy men's gymnastics team will continue its run of postseason action this Saturday afternoon with the 2026 ECAC Championship meet at West Point. After collecting six straight conference titles from 2018 through 2024 (there was no meet in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic), Navy was knocked off the top of the podium last April as Army earned top honors. This Saturday starting at 1 p.m., the Mids will look to avenge that runner-up result and return the favor by taking back the title from the Black Knights in their home gym, Christl Arena.

The entire field of the event consists of No. 9 Greenville, No. 10 Navy, No. 11 Army, No. 12 Springfield, No. 14 William & Mary and No. 15 Simpson College. All six of these teams saw each other in action at the 2026 USAG Collegiate Championship just two weeks ago in Colorado Springs, Colorado. In the most recent standings the scoring averages for Greenville, Navy, Army and Springfield are separated by only 2.067 points with the Panthers and Mids' positioning decided by just 0.3 points, 310.7 to 310.4.

The Virtius platform will be used to score Saturday's competition.

Most Recent ECAC Championship ~ April 5, 2025 in Indianola, Iowa
The reign of Navy Men's Gymnastics atop the podium at the ECAC Championship came to an end as a few untimely miscues and a near perfect outing by Army saw the Black Knights hold off the Mids by 3.95 points, 313.5 to 309.55 at Simpson College's Cowles Fieldhouse. Winners of seven straight ECAC Championships, the Mids were on the hunt throughout as the Black Knights broke out to a 1.8-point lead after netting 54.3 points on the vault versus 52.5 for the Mids on the floor exercise during the first rotation of the meet.

At the conclusion of six rotations the final leaderboard saw Army in first with 313.5 points with Navy right behind in second at 309.55. The last team to make the medal podium was Greenville, who registered 307.3 points on Saturday. Springfield and William & Mary were edged off the podium as they finished within 1.3 points of the Panthers with respectively totals of 306.8 and 306.0. The host Simpson College Storm placed sixth with 299.6 points.

The Mids' individual effort was led by the duo of Isaiah Drake and Matthew Petros who each collected a pair of ECAC Championship gold medals. Drake cemented his name in the record book as he won the all-around competition for the fourth time in four years. Additionally, he finished atop the standings for rings. Petros' two victories came on the pommel horse and parallel bars. The talented junior has now gone back-to-back ECAC Championships with titles on the p-bars.

As a team, Navy scored 52.5 points on the floor exercise, 49.5 on the pommel horse, 50.95 on the rings, 53.75 on the vault, 51.35 on the parallel bars and 51.5 on the high bar.

Last Time Out ~ USAG Collegiate Championships: March 20 & 21 in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Coming in as the defending champions of the USAG Collegiate Championship, Navy's bid to repeat was short-circuited by an Army squad that started out hot and never let up as the Black Knights secured the team title on Friday. Strong in moments, but inconsistent in others, the Mids registered a combined team score of 310.75 that placed them third among the field of seven opponents. The Black Knights finished first with 313.05 points in the meet that was hosted by Air Force at Cadet West Gym. The Greenville Panthers came in runner-up with 311.85 points.

The rest of the standings saw Springfield College finish 0.4 points behind Navy in fourth at 310.35 with William & Mary rounding out the top five with 308.55 points. Air Force and Simpson College placed sixth and seventh overall with respective scores of 306.75 and 302.40.

Jonah Soltz highlighted the Mids' individual effort on Friday as the sophomore came in first in the all-around competition to collect his first-ever USAG title. Additionally, he will advance into a pair of event finals on Saturday. Brian Solomon also medaled in the all-around competition as he placed fourth overall, 0.05 points out of third place. Similar to Soltz his performance on Friday qualified him for two event finals.

Additionally, three other Navy gymnasts, Matthew PetrosDanilo Viciana and Daniel Gurevich will continue onto Saturday's event finals after placing among the top four in their respective events on Friday; Petros on the vault and high bar and Viciana and Gurevich on the floor exercise. Petros will be the top seed for the vault finals, while Viciana will be the same for the floor.

As a team, Navy scored 51.8 points on the floor exercise, 50.95 on the pommel horse, 50.85 on the rings, 55.2 on the vault, 51.9 on the parallel bars and 50.05 on the high bar.

On Saturday in the event finals, the Mids were well represented on the podium throughout the majority of the meet as six of the team's nine routines garnered spots on the six-man podium. Gurevich and Solomon spearheaded Navy's efforts as the duo each recorded silver medal-winning performances, Gurevich on the floor exercise and Solomon on the parallel bars.
