ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy men's track and field team won four events to build a significant lead on the opening day of the 2026 Patriot League Outdoor Championship on Friday at Ingram Field. The Midshipmen totaled 93 points to take a 55-point advantage over second-place Army (38) into Saturday's final day.
Field Events
William Pierce highlighted the field events for Navy with a school-record long jump mark of 7.67 meters (25-2) to win the event. Pierce broke James Campbell's mark of 7.62 meters (25-0.25) that had stood for 53 years. He also became the first Midshipmen to win the event since Ronald Belany in 2008.
Nick Simmons also found success in the event, placing fourth with a leap of 7.35 meters (24-01.50).
The Mids dominated the pole vault by taking three of the top four spots.
Brian Schloeder set a meet record to win the event at 5.33 meters (17-05.75), breaking an eight-year-old mark of 5.32 meters (17-05.50) set by Army's Lee Bares.
Cooper Wakley followed in second place at 4.97 meters (16-03.50). Wakley earned the placement tiebreaker over third-place Ben Hill of Lafayette and fourth-place
Adam Bell, who both cleared 4.97 meters but required more attempts.
"
William Pierce setting a school record in the long jump and then
Brian Schloeder having a big performance in the pole vault were big contributors to a strong start on day one," director of track and field
Jamie Cook said.
Malachi Cummings recorded a career-best javelin throw of 66.01 meters (216-7) to win the event.
Merrick Hocking reached the podium in the hammer throw with a second-place mark of 60.00 meters (196-10). Hocking held the top spot until Aiden Tacker of Bucknell claimed victory with a throw of 60.28 meters (197-9) on his final attempt.
Aaron Spears added to Navy's strong performance in the event with a fourth-place throw of 57.97 meters (190-2).
Track Events
Navy started the meet with a dominant performance in the 10,000-meter race, sweeping the podium.

Logan Flament clocked a personal-best time of 29:32.00 to take third.
"We started the meet strong with the 1-2-3 finish in the 10,000 meters," Cook said. "That was a gutsy race. Great job by those guys and coach Lanzel on putting together a good strategy to start the day on a high note."
