ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Navy women's rugby head coach
Murph McCarthy announced that
Meagan Alvarez and
Mia Young have been selected as team captains for the 2026-27 season.
"The staff and I are excited about Meagan and Mia leading the team this season," McCarthy said. "Meagan and Mia are hard workers and have excelled on and off the field. They are going to be key to our success and raising the standards of the program."
Alvarez appeared in seven games last fall, including three in the starting lineup. The Miami native finished second on the team in total points (29) and conversion kicks (9) in 15s competition last season. Overall, she has totaled 21 conversion kicks and six tries in her three seasons with the Mids.
"It's an absolute honor to represent this team," Alvarez said. "I dreamed of this role since my freshman year when I fell in love with the sport of rugby. Getting to lead a team with Mia [Young] in a sport I learned three years ago is the biggest blessing of my USNA career. I'm excited for what this season holds for Navy women's rugby."
Young has been the team's primary kicker over the last two seasons, totaling 23 conversions. Last fall, the Falls Church, Virginia, native led the team in total points (30) and conversion kicks (10) through nine games.
Young also led Navy to its winningest 7s season last spring, securing 14 wins and a third-place finish at the Collegiate Rugby Championship Premier Women's Cup. She ranked second on the team with 89 points on 32 conversions and five tries.
"I am extremely honored and grateful to be selected by my teammates to lead and support them on and off the field," Young said. "I cannot wait to get back on the field with the girls and have a great season."
The Navy women's rugby team opens the 2026-27 season against Brown on Saturday, Sept. 5, in Providence, Rhode Island.
