PITTSFORD, N.Y. - Despite leading the Monroe Invitational Championship for two days, Navy's Billy Hurley (Leesburg, Va.) shot a 3-over par 73 to finish the tournament in a four-way tie for second place. Wake Forest's Kyle Reifers claimed the title behind a 2-under par 68 in the final round, leap-frogging the field from seventh to first.
Hurley, who alongside South Carolina's Alex Hamilton, held a 2-stroke lead over Kevin Kisner of Georgia and Ben Hayes of USC going into the final round. Hurley produced an eagle on the 12th hole to regain the tournament lead with an 8-under par. The 14th, 16th and 17th holes were rough for the Academy grad, however, as he bogeyed all three holes. Hurley needed to birdie the 18th, but his putt ran shy of the cup. He and Hamilton both shot par to finish in second.
UNC-Greensboro's Andy Bare shot the low round of the day with a 5-under par 65 to make the major jump of the day from 19th to second.
Hurley returns to action next week, competing in the Northeast Amateur in Rumford, R.I.
