ANNAPOLIS, Md. -Army recorded wins in 12 of 19 events on its way to handing the Navy track team a 117-85 loss in a rain-soaked Star Meet competition on Saturday afternoon at Ingram Field.
With the victory, the Black Knights pull ahead and claim a slim 42-41 advantage in the all-time outdoor series. Coming into the weekend, Navy had won 4-of-6 and seven of the last 10 outdoor Star Meets against Army. The setback was the also first for Navy during the outdoor season, as the Mids dropped to 3-1 on the year.
"It was certainly a less than ideal day in terms of weather. That being said, we just didn't have the horses to stay with them," said Navy head coach Stephen Cooksey.
The Mids recorded a total of seven individual victories on the afternoon, four of which came in the field event portion of the meet.
Sophomore Devan Clark (Vorhees, N.J.) led a Navy sweep in the javelin thanks to his IC4A-qualifying toss of 198-0 (60.37m). Clark was followed by freshman Chris Ricks and junior Tim Gruber (Grove City, Pa.) in second- and third-place, respectivey.
In the high jump, junior Bill Stillman (Norfolk, Mass.) recorded his first victory of the spring courtesy of a clearance of the bar at 6-4 (1.93m).
Junior Tyrell Arment (Wamblee, S.D.) and freshman Nathan Woodason (Dalton, Ga.) added victories in the discus and pole vault won the discus events. Arment paced the field with a PR and IC4A-qualifying 161-0 (49.09m) toss, while Woodason notched a career-best mark of his own with a 13-1.5 (4.00m) clearance.
Navy's efforts on the track were led by individual winners Andrew Hanko (Montville, N.J.) and Alex Jackson (Elmhurst, Ill.). Hanko won the 5,000m (14:27.86) in convincing fashion, finishing by more than 17 seconds ahead of Army's top performer. It was his second 5K victory in as many years against the Black Knights. Meanwhile, Jackson, a first-year sprinter, picked up his first victory in the A-N series, taking the 400 in a time of 49.43.
The Mids also posted a victory in the 4x400m relay with a time of 3:23.43.
Navy is now off a week before heading on the road Saturday, April 23 to compete at the oldest and largest track & field competition in the United States, the Penn Relays at Franklin Field in Philadelphia.
