Final Stats

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy sprint football team scored 30 points in the first half en route to a 37-0 victory over Post in the home opener on Friday night at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. With the win, Navy improved to 3-0, overall, and 2-0 in the Collegiate Sprint Football League. The loss dropped Post to 1-1, overall, and 1-1 in CSFL play.

Navy running back David Williams continued his impressive start to the 2011 season as he rushed for 179 yards on 16 carries and scored two first-half touchdowns.

The Midshipmen outgained the Eagles, 296-29, on the ground and, 447-79, in total offense.

"Post had a great victory last week, so we knew they were going to come to play," said Navy head coach Maj. Mitch Maury, USMC. "They're a well-coached team. They had some trouble executing some plays and that's a testament to our guys. We came off the ball hard and were able to blow up some of their plays."

Post opened the game by going 17 yards, which tied for its longest drive of the night, on five plays to the Navy 36-yard line where the drive stalled.

After Navy foiled the Eagles' fake-punt attempt, the Mids took over and picked up huge chunks of yardage on the ground - courtesy of Williams and fullback D.J. Hooper. The two backs combined for 46 yards before quarterback Lewis Correale hooked up Drew Presnell in the end zone on his first pass attempt of the game to give Navy the lead.

On their next possession, the Midshipmen wasted little time in finding the end zone again. After two plays put Navy at its own 36-yard line, Williams got the carry and after shifting out of the hole and eluding two would-be-tacklers, he went 64 yards to the end zone.

Montecinos' extra point gave Navy a 13-0 lead less than nine minutes into the game.

Defensive back Brendan West, who was named the CSFL Special Teams Player of the Week on Wednesday, continued to be a factor on the field on Friday. After recovering a fumble in the first quarter, he picked off the Eagles' Erich Broadrick's pass in the second quarter and returned it 14 yards to the Post 35-yard line.

Just four plays later, Williams scored his second touchdown of the day from 18 yards out as the Mids took a 20-0 lead.

For Williams it was his team-leading sixth rushing touchdown of the season.

"It was another great game for David," said Maury. "He's got the combination of agility, power and speed - which he showed on his breakaway touchdown run. It's very impressive."

Navy got the ball back on the ensuing kickoff as the Eagle's Mike Chance fumbled on the return.

Correale threw his second touchdown pass of the game four plays later when he found tight end Will Harris in the middle of the end zone.

Montecinos' extra point gave Navy a 27-0 lead with 9:42 to play in the half.

The early lead allowed the Mids' defense to become more aggressive as they picked up three sacks on the next three Post possessions.

A 22-yard field goal by Montecinos as time expired in the first half gave the Mids a 30-0 lead.

Correale closed out the scoring for Navy when he threw his third touchdown pass of the night with just over eight minutes remaining in the game.

After a holding call forced the Mids back to the Post 14-yard line, Correale hit fellow freshman Jesse Holian with a pass in the end zone on a third-and-goal play.

In his first-career start, Correale went 12-of-21 for 136 yards, throwing three TDs and two interceptions.

The Navy defense got stronger as the game went on, holding Post to just 17 yards of total offense in the second half and forcing three-and-outs on every possession.

"The defense is taking it one game at a time, but they want to be the best defense we've ever had," said Maury.

Navy linebacker T.J. Leonard led the Mids with seven tackles, including two sacks, and also forced a fumble.

As a whole, the Navy defense produced a total of 11 tackles for loss for 39 yards in registering its second consecutive shutout.

Navy will hit the road next weekend to take on Mansfield on Saturday, Oct. 8 at 1 p.m.
