SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Navy men's outdoor track and field team opened its 2012 season at the Point Loma Open on Saturday with five event victories and two IC4A-qualifying performances. The team has been out in San Diego for the duration of the Naval Academy's Spring Break this week and Saturday's meet was the culmination of the team's trip. There was no team scoring at the Point Loma Open.

Unfortunately due to cold, rainy and windy weather, the team did not participate in all of the events in which it was originally scheduled.

"We had a very good week of training out here but the weather didn't give us a chance to finish today," head coach Stephen Cooksey said. "We did have some really good performances though from Miles Snelgrove in the javelin, Chris Boniwell in the discus, Matt Evers in the 800 and Rico Goldstone did fairly well in the 100."

Senior captain Chris Ricks opened the day's competition by taking second in the hammer throw with a mark of 175-8 (53.54m, IC4A). Sophomore Billy Grammer was fifth in the hammer at 167-1 (50.92m).

Junior Miles Snelgrove led a Navy contingent that swept spots 1-5 in the javelin throw, winning with a mark of 208-5 (63.53m, IC4A). Ricks was second at 191-3 (58.29m), just shy of what could have been his second IC4A-qualifying mark of the day.

Freshman Aaron Zack took third in the javelin in his collegiate debut with a 184-2 (56.13m), freshman David Capote was fourth (164-11, 50.28m) and Jordan Gruber was fifth (164-6, 50.14m).

Senior Chris Boniwell had a solid start to his final outdoor season by winning the discus and taking second in the shot put. Boniwell's best mark in the discus was a 151-8 (46.22m) and he was second in the shot put at 47-1½ (14.36m).

Sophomore Kyle Fortney was second to Boniwell in the discus (150-9, 45.95m) and sophomore Zach Duncavage was fourth (143-11, 43.88m)

Senior Josh Houston tied for first place in the high jump with a clear of 6-4 (1.93m).

In the running events, senior Matt Evers took first place in the 800m run with a time of 1:56.63 and he was followed by freshman Joshua Kingsland in second place (1:57.89). Junior Joshua Shaw took fourth with a time of 1:59.92.

Sophomore Weston Kennedy took second in the 1,500m run at 4:04.69 and freshman Rico Goldstone won the 100m dash with a time of 11.25.

Freshman Jeremy Duruji took fifth in the 400m hurdles (1:01.03) and senior Fleet White was seventh (1:02.50).

The Mids will return to Annapolis to host a four-team meet next Saturday at Ingram Field.
