Navy Men's Outdoor Track Wins Maryland Invitational

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Navy men's outdoor track and field team (12-0) won the Maryland Invitational on Saturday at Kehoe Track. Navy amassed 244 team points, placing ahead of Temple (143.5), UMBC (135.5), Maryland (128), Georgetown (46), American (24), York (21), Johns Hopkins (16) and Howard (12).

The Mids won five events and posted five IC4A-qualifying marks. The meet was Navy's final tune-up before the Army-Navy Outdoor Star Meet next Saturday in West Point, N.Y.

"We had a decent day overall with some good individual performances and some very high-caliber marks," head coach Stephen Cooksey said. "We are starting to get set up for Army next week and we are getting our guys into place. Army has a very good all-around team so it should be another close one next week."

Sophomore Zack Duncavage set a new PR in the discus with a first-place mark of 171-11 (52.40m), which was well over the IC4A standard. Sophomore Kyle Fortney placed third in the discus at 153-6 (46.79m).

Senior Chris Ricks won the hammer throw for the second time this season, making an IC4A mark of 180-6 (55.01m), his best distance of the season. Sophomore Billy Grammer was fourth at 170-0 (51.82m).

Navy went 1-2-3 in the javelin throw, with freshman Aaron Zack taking first place at 190-0 (57.91m). Freshman David Capote was second (187-1, 57.02m, PR) and senior Craig Stocker was third (172-9, 52.65m).

Junior Andrew Wondolowski placed eighth overall and was the fourth overall finisher in the shot put with a mark of 42-3½ (12.89m).

Freshman Mark Vetere won the pole vault for the second week in a row, clearing 15-11¾ (4.87m), which is over the IC4A standard and the best height of his collegiate career. Sophomore Ryan Kochert placed second (15-5½, 4.71m) and senior Paul Neidhardt was fourth (14-11½, 4.56m).

Senior Ken Bunnell won the 3,000m steeplechase for the second straight week, clocking an IC4A-qualifying time and PR time of 9:08.87. Freshman Shane O'Donnell placed second in the steeplechase at 9:33.54.

Senior Lucas Connelly was the top college finisher in the 800m run and the second finisher overall behind an unattached runner. Connelly clocked a 1:53.26 and was followed by sophomore Weston Kennedy (1:53.45) and senior Matt Evers (1:53.76).

Senior Dominic Della Pelle placed second in the 1,500m at 3:51.36 and junior Kyle Satterwhite was third at 3:53.96.

Navy had three freshmen score in the 3,000m run. Drew Calcagno placed fifth (8:41.63), Jeramy Triplett was sixth (8:44.01) and John Sweeney was eighth (8:54.99). Sophomore Alex Merrall placed second in the 5,000m run at 15:11.05.

Junior Mitch Simmonds hit an IC4A-qualifying mark in the 110m hurdles prelims at 14.83 and then ran a 14.93 to place fifth in the finals. Sophomore Isaac Losee placed seventh in the finals (15.78) after running a 15.65 in the prelims. Freshman Josh Werling placed fifth in the 400m hurdles (56.60) and junior Chris Fowler was sixth (56.67).

Sophomore Brett Bogaard placed sixth overall in the 100m dash at 10.99 and also placed sixth in the 200m dash at 22.20. Senior Alex Jackson ran a 49.67 in the 400m dash to place sixth and sophomore Jeremy Cadiente was eighth (50.28).

Senior Josh Houston finished second in the high jump, clearing 6-8 (2.03m). Freshman Rico Goldstone placed third in the long jump at 21-8 (6.60m) and sophomore Daniel Park took sixth (20-9¼, 6.33m).

Navy also took third place in the 4x100m relay (42.59) and was fifth in the 4x400m (3:21.69).

Navy will next take on Army in the annual Outdoor Star Meet next Saturday at 2:30 pm in West Point, N.Y. Army leads the all-time outdoor series, 44-41, but Navy is coming off an indoor Star Meet victory earlier this year.
