ANNAPOLIS, Md. —
Casey Cobb (So, Nampa, Idaho) and team captain
Nicholas Gil (Sr, Crystal Lake, Ill.) captured individual titles to lead the Navy wrestling team to a third-place finish at the 16-team Navy Classic held Saturday at the Wesley Brown Field House in Annapolis. In total, six of the 23 Mids who wrestled in the tournament placed among the top six.
Michigan, meanwhile, became the 15th different program to win the team title in the 41 years the Navy Classic has been held. The Wolverines bested second-place Indiana by 30.5 points to become the seventh different team to win the tournament crown in the last seven years (2012 Kent State, 2013 Wisconsin, 2014 Chattanooga, 2015 Princeton, 2016 Indiana, 2017 Navy, 2018 Michigan State).
"As a team, I felt we competed pretty well today," said fifth-year Navy head coach
Joel Sharratt. "We started slow in a few matches than we train for and did not make conditioning a factor in our favor. However, we are gaining experience in these events and it's critical that our wrestlers use every opportunity to maximize lessons learned."
The Highlights
•
Nicholas Gil improved to 9-1 on the year, winning each of his last nine matches.
• Gil, ranked 15th nationally, put together a flawless 5-0 record in Saturday's Navy Classic, that featured a 7-6 decision over sixth-ranked Sa'Derian Perry in the championship bout at 141 pounds. It marked just the third win over a ranked wrestler in Gil's career and first this season.
• Gil has now won four collegiate tournaments, including both the Bearcat Open and the Navy Classic this season.
•
Casey Cobb put together a 4-0 record en route to winning the 133-pound individual title, the first collegiate crown of his career.
• Cobb won his four matches by a combined seven points, including a 7-5 decision over Michigan State's Anthony Tutolo in the championship bout.
• Taking third place at 197 pounds was
Joshua Roetman (Jr, Kotzebue, Alaska), who participated for the first time since pinning Ohio State's Kevin Snyder in the opening dual of the season.
• Roetman dropped to the backside of the bracket following a 10-4 loss to Air Force's Anthony McLaughlin, but fought back to place third. Roetman shut out Bucknell's Drew Phipps, 6-0, in the championship match.
• Coming off a third-place showing a week ago at the Bearcat Open, 165-pound
Jonathan Carrera (Sr, Milton, Mass.) earned a fifth-place finish at the Navy Classic.
• Carrera won his first three matches of the day before dropping a 10-2 major decision to 18th-ranked Jonathan Viruet of Brown in the semifinals. Carrera lost a 5-3 sudden victory decision in the following match against Kent State's Isaac Bast, but bounced back to hand Cleveland State's John Vaughn a 14-5 loss in the fifth-place match.
• After dropping a 15-6 major decision to Brown's Bryce Rogers in his second match of the day, 174-pound
Spencer Carey (Jr, Ringwood, N.J.) was forced to fight his way through the consolation bracket.
• Carey won six consecutive matches, including pinning Air Force's Cody Surratt, to place fifth.
•
Anthony Cable (Poolesville, Md.), who finished fourth at the Bearcat Open, took sixth at the Navy Classic at 184 pounds.
• Cable was tripped up by Michigan State's Cam Caffey in the quarterfinals, but the Navy senior fought back to win two in a row before being pinned by Kent State's Andrew McNally.
• Both Cable and Hunter Yeargan reached their limit on matches for the day with Yeargan being awarded fifth and Cable sixth.
Quick Takes from the Coach
• Our performance was led by two champions -
Casey Cobb and Nick Gil. There are clear data points that show what these two wrestlers are doing the right way to win at the highest level of NCAA wrestling.
• Gil's win over the nations #6 ranked wrestler (Sa'Derian Perry, Old Dominion) was as solid of a match as he has wrestled. He is consistently aggressive, wrestles a very high pace and is always in good position.
• Cobb showed the nation what he is capable of doing. His title was earned wrestling the NAVY WAY today. He is constantly maintaining great position, is very physical with his hands and remains offensive the entire match. His conditioning that carried through into the third period of overtime was ultimately the difference maker in today's title bout.
