Navy Squash Ushers in Tyler Osborne Era with Pair of Wins

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — The 16th-ranked Navy squash team opened the 2018-19 season over the weekend earning a 5-4 exhibition win over the Olympic Club, followed by 9-0 victories over Stanford and Cal in San Francisco. It marked the first coaching victories for first-year Navy head coach Tyler Osborne who became the program's seventh coach in its 71-year history when he was hired in July to take over for Craig Dawson, who left his alma mater after 18 seasons as head coach.

The Olympic Club not only welcomed the Midshipmen for Friday night's exhibition, it opened its doors to to the entire weekend after a scheduling glitch at Stanford. The Mids scored a hard-fought 5-4 exhibition victory over the Olympic Club and featured wins by the three freshmen in the lineup.

"Our Friday night match against the Olympic Club was a really good, quality match," said Osborne. "I am very thankful to the Olympic Club for putting together a solid team and look forward to future contests.

"The freshmen were excellent in the match with all three taking their first wins, including Ben Korn battling back from two games down to win in five."

Less than 24 hours later, Navy officially opened its season with back-to-back 9-0 victories over Stanford and Cal. The Mids utilized two different lineups for the matches, winning all 18 individual matches by way of 3-0 counts. Those players posting 2-0 marks for the weekend included Jack Lentz (So, Philadelphia, Pa.), Senen Ubina (Sr, Greenwich, Conn.), Dylan Sweeney (Sr, New York, N.Y.), Jamie Kjorlien (Sr, Greenwich, Conn.), Ryan York (Fr, Hunt Valley, Md.), Danny Finnegan (Williamstown, Mass.), Ben Korn (Fr, Stevenson, Md.) and Gus Prager (Fr, New York, N.Y.). Brother John (Sr) and Michael Kacergis (Jr, Malvern, Pa.) also so action for the Mids with both earning one win on the weekend.

"It felt really great to get out there for my first college match," said Prager.  "I played well and capitalized on some of my work in practice from the past few weeks. I focused on hitting straight shots and moving my opponent, and it payed off. I'm looking forward to a great season."

In addition to York, Korn and Prager earning their first collegiate victories over the weekend, Finnegan also secured his first varsity victories after battling injuries throughout his rookie campaign. Meanwhile, Ubina, Sweeney and Kjorlien also moved up among Navy's all-time winningest players. Ubina improved to 64-26 and is tied for 16th on the list, Sweeney pushed his mark to 60-23 and is now tied for 19th and Kjorlien is tied for 23rd with a 57-24 mark.

" We had great effort and intensity from the team in the matches against Stanford and Cal," added Osborne. "As a team, we worked hard and were very disciplined. Another shout out to the freshmen who went 6-0 in their matches on Saturday."

The Midshipmen return to action on Wednesday when they play host to 13th-ranked Virginia in their home opener. Action is set for 5:30 pm at the Halsey International Squash Courts and admission is free.
