ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy sprint football team (1-0) hosts archrival Army West Point (1-0) in the annual Star game as part of the overall Army-Navy Star Series presented by USAA on Friday, Sept. 21 at 7:00 p.m. at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. The game is the first Star Series game of the 2018-19 season.

Army-Navy Star Series presented by USAA
Last year, Navy won the overall annual Star Series against Army West Point, 13-9-2 (.583). After opening competition against the Black Knights, 3-8-2, the Midshipmen claimed the final seven Stars and 10 of the last 11 to cap the greatest comeback in the history of the Army-Navy series.

The Series
Navy leads the all-time sprint series with Army West Point in sprint football, 42-35-1 (.545), including a 19-14 (.576) mark in Annapolis. Two of the most dominant teams in sprint football history, Army West Point and Navy have won or shared the sprint football title 71 times, including 29 outright by the Mids and 27 by the Black Knights. The league was split into divisions last season with Army West Point winning the North before defeating Penn in the first CSFL Championship game.

CSFL Special Teams Player of the Week
Kicker
Jared Swenson (Seymour, Wis.) earned Collegiate Sprint Football League (CSFL) Special Teams Player of the Week honors after helping the Midshipmen to a 45-7 victory on the road against Franklin Pierce on Saturday afternoon. Swenson scored nine points in Navy's 45-7 victory on the road in the season opener against Franklin Pierce. He converted six PATs, while adding a field goal. For Swenson, it is his fourth weekly accolade of his career.

New Coach
The game will be the first home game under first-year head coach
Captain Jason Dewald, USMC. Dewald directed the sprint football team to a 45-7 victory at Franklin Pierce in his debut as a head coach last weekend. Dewald graduated from Baldwin Wallace University in Berea, Ohio in 2007 receiving his bachelor's degree in history. He played two years of football at Baldwin Wallace on the offensive line. After suffering an injury, Dewald was selected to be a student coach for the junior varsity team for two seasons, serving as the offensive line and co-offensive coordinator for the JV team. During his time as a student coach, the junior varsity team went 13-3. In 2008, he received a commission in the United States Marine Corps.

Captains
This season, Navy will be led by a pair of senior captains –
Dane Livengood (Treynor, Iowa) and
Sheppard Wilson (Charlotte, N.C.). Livengood, a 2016 Honorable Mention All-CSFL selection, will serve as the offensive captain, while Wilson, who is also the captain of the captains for the Midshipmen, will be the defensive representative. Wilson earned First Team All-CSFL honors las season.

Last Time Out – at Franklin Pierce (W, 45-7)
Navy opened up the 2018 season with a 45-7 victory at Franklin Pierce at Sodexo Field in Rindge, N.H. The Midshipmen started slow, but found their stride in the second quarter, scoring 24 points to take control of the game. The Midshipmen tallied 245 yards of total offense, including 135 yards in the air and 110 yards on the ground. The Ravens finished with 208 yards of total offense, but were hampered by 165 yards worth of penalties.

Walt Fagan (Rock Hill, S.C.) earned the start at quarterback. The junior finished the day 11-for-19 with 107 yards and four touchdowns.
Braydan Chmiel (Warrenton, Mo.) also saw time at quarterback, finishing the game 3-for-8 with 28 yards and an interception.

Four Mids finished the game with a pair of catches each.
Jay Cooke (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) converted both of his reception into touchdowns, while
Jared Wiltshire (Elizabethton, Tenn.) and
Dane Livengood (Treynor, Iowa) each added TD receptions in the game.
Caleb Champion (Milton, Fla.) led the way on the ground for Navy, finishing with a team-high 67 yards and a score, while Chmiel added 57 yards.

The defense limited the Franklin Pierce offense to 208 total yards of offense, while causing six turnovers – three fumble recoveries and three interceptions.
Dean Rye (Fairfax, Va.) led the team with a team-high seven tackles, while adding an interception.
Troy Monroe (Columbus, Ga.) was second on the team with five stops and a team-high 4.0 tackles for loss, including a pair of sacks.
Grant Hooper (Huntingtown, Md.) notched an interception with a 41-yard return for a touchdown. In addition, Navy had three players recover fumbles in the game.

Last Time vs. Army (L, 40-6 – Oct. 7, 2017)
Navy suffered a 40-6 defeat at the hand of archrival Army West Point at Shea Stadium in West Point, N.Y. The Black Knights jumped out to an early lead and were able to keep the Midshipmen offense contained to earn the Star.

Army had a distinct advantage in the passing game, throwing for 260 yards compared to 128 yards in the air by Navy, while the Mids had a 79-63 edge in yards on the ground. The Black Knights tallied just two more first downs than the Midshipmen. Army held a five-minute advantage in time of possession, holding the ball for nearly 10 minutes longer than Navy in the second half.
