Sprint Football Steps Out of Division for Game with Cornell

Navy will play Cornell on Friday night at 7:00 p.m. at Schoellkopf Field in Ithaca, N.Y.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy sprint football team (5-0) will play a non-divisional game with Cornell (1-4) on Friday night at 7:00 p.m. at Schoellkopf Field in Ithaca, N.Y. Live stats will be available and the game will be live streamed on ESPN+.
 
With the Midshipmen's win against Penn (W, 16-7) and an Alderson Broaddus loss last Friday night, the Mids advance to the CSFL Championship game in back-to-back seasons. Last year, Navy (South Champion) posted a 24-10 victory over rival Army West Point (North Champion) to claim the Collegiate Sprint Football League title in the second annual CSFL Championship game.
 
All-Time Series
Navy holds a 58-13-2 (.808) overall record against Cornell. The series with the Big Red dates back to 1946 when the Midshipmen claimed a 15-0 victory in Annapolis. The Mids opened the series with a 14-game win streak (14-0) and are 26-2 (.929) against Cornell in the last 28 meetings.
 
Navy is 26-9-1 (.736) all-time against Cornell in Ithaca, N.Y. The Midshipmen have won the last four meetings between the two teams in Ithaca. The Big Red's last win against the Midshipmen came in Ithaca as the home team claimed a 16-10 victory in overtime.
 
Sprint Football Claims Pair of Weekly Awards
Navy's Trey Ogden (Chesapeake, Va.) and Jared Swenson (Seymour, Wis.) were named Collegiate Sprint Football League (CSFL) Defensive and Special Teams Players of the Week, respectively. The duo helped lead Navy to a 16-7 victory over Penn on Friday night, giving the Midshipmen the CSFL South Division title and a spot in the CSFL Championship game.
 
Ogden finished the game with season-high eight total tackles, posting a team-high five solo stops (season best). The junior led the team with a season-high 2.5 tackles for loss, including his first sack of the season. For the season, Ogden has tallied 19 total tackles, including 10 solo stops with 4.0 tackles for loss and a sack.
 
Swenson scored a game-high 10 points in the victory, posting three field goals made with a PAT. After a rough start to the season, the senior connected on 3-of-4 field goal attempts, including a pair over 45 yards. Swenson started the game with a 45-yard field goal to give Navy a 3-0 advantage, while tacking on the extra point on Navy's go-ahead touchdown to put the Midshipmen in front 10-7. He tied a career-high with a 48-yard field goal to extend the advantage to 13-7, and added some insurance with a 32-yard field goal to provide the final score of 16-7.
 
Last Time Out
The Navy sprint football team (5-0, 3-0 CSFL-South) posted a 16-7 victory over Penn (3-2, 1-1 CSLF-South) to claim the Collegiate Sprint Football League South Division title for the second consecutive season. With the win and an Alderson Broaddus loss, the Mids advance to the CSFL Championship game in back-to-back seasons.
 
Offensively, Navy outgained Penn, 269-222 in total offense. The Mids rushed for 168 yards compared 106 yards on the ground by the Quakers. Penn had a slight 116-101 advantage in the passing game. Navy was led by Caleb Champion (Milton, Fla.) who finished the game with 99 total yards. The senior running back tallied 65 yards on the ground to go with one pass completion of 34 yards for what proved to be the game-winning touchdown. Braydan Chmiel (Warrenton, Mo.) finished the game with 73 rushing yards to go along with 67 passing yards. Senior captain J.T. Thompson (Stratham, N.H.) led the team with three receptions for a team-high 62 yards and Mids' lone touchdown.
 
Defensively, the Midshipmen finished with 68 tackles, including 9.0 tackles for loss and 5.0 sacks. The defense intercepted two passes, forced a fumble, and tallied three pass breakups. David Postma (Bellevue, Wash.) led the team with 10 tackles, while Trey Ogden (Chesapeake, Va.) and Luke Kustra (Vienna, Va.) added eight stops apiece. Ogden finished with a team-high 2.5 tackles for loss, including a sack, while Kustra was also credited with a sack. Pat Guinan (Elmhurst, Ill.) and Luis Castillo (Mason, Texas) each picked off Penn passes in the game.
 
On special teams, Jared Swenson (Seymour, Wis.) finished the game with 10 points. The senior drilled three field goals, including a season-long boot of 48 yards. Swenson also drained a 45-yard kick, while adding a 32-yard field goal. In addition, he was true on his one PAT attempt. Swenson also successfully recovered an on-side kick attempt.
 
Last Time vs. Cornell (Oct. 20, 2017)
Navy posted a 49-14 victory over Cornell at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. The Midshipmen used touchdowns from seven different players, including a blocked punt for a score to cruise to victory.
 
Offensively, the Mids tallied 467 yards of total offense, including 282 yards passing and 185 yards on the ground. Navy averaged 7.0 yards per play, including 18.8 per completion. The Midshipman scored a season-high 49 points on six passing touchdowns and a blocked punt for a score.
 
Plebes Braydan Chmiel (Warrenton, Mo.) and Jacob Hudson (Wilmington, Del.) combined to go 15-for-20 through the air for 282 yards and six touchdowns. Chmiel, who made his second start of the season at QB, amassed 228 yards on 13-of-18 passing with five TDs, while Hudson connected on both of his pass attempts for 54 yards, including a touchdown.
 
The Mids had nine different players catch a pass in the game, including six different players with touchdown receptions. Sam Shaunak (Collierville, Tenn.) led the way with four receptions for 86 yards and a TD, while Eric Spicer (St. Marys, Ohio), Jay Cooke (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.), and Dane Livengood (Treynor, Iowa) each brought down two receptions each. Spicer, Livengood, Austin Rogers (Cottonwood, Ariz.), Ramesh Nagarajah (Boston, Mass.), and Walt Fagan (Rock Hill, S.C.) each joined Shaunak with touchdown catches.
 
Seven different players carried the football in the game with six players registering 20 yards or more on the ground. Caleb Champion (Milton, Fla.) led the way with 46 yards, followed by Stefano Saragusa (Haines City, Fla.) who carried for 35.
 
Defensively, the trio of Dean Rye (Fairfax, Va.), Luke Coughlin (Islip, N.Y.), and Sheppard Wilson (Charlotte, N.C.) each finished with nine tackles apiece. Coughlin notched a pair of tackles for loss, including the game's only sack while also forcing a fumble. Wilson blocked a Big Red punt and senior captain Alex Oldham (Dayton, Ohio) was able to jump on the loose ball in the end zone for a defensive score. Grant Hooper (Huntingtown, Md.) recorded an interception and Troy Monroe (Columbus, Ga.) joined Coughlin with a pair of TFLs.
