Mids to Face Drexel in Opening Round of CSA Team Championship

The 12th-ranked Navy squash team (13-4) will face 13th-seeded Drexel on Friday at 4:00 pm in its quest to win the Hoehn Cup at the 2019 College Squash Association (CSA) Team Championship held this weekend with Yale playing as the host site. Joining the Mids in the Hoehn Division are (9) Virginia, (10) Western Ontario, (11) St. Lawrence, (13) Drexel, (14) Cornell, (15) George Washington and (16) Franklin & Marshall who are vying for the No. 9-16 positions in the tournament.

Mids at the CSA Team Championship
Six of the nine Navy players have made previous appearances at the CSA Team Championship with seniors Jamie Kjorlien, Dylan Sweeney and Senen Ubina all posting 5-4 records during their careers.  Junior Owen Davis stands 4-2, while junior Michael Kacergis and sophomore Jack Lentz have one win apiece. Sophomore Danny Finnegan and freshmen Ben Korn and Ryan York will make their championship debut on Friday.

More on the Mids
• After opening the season 11-1, the Mids have put together a 3-2 mark over the last month.
• Navy is coming off an emotional 5-4 come-from-behind win over Franklin & Marshall on Senior Day a week ago that saw all three seniors among the top nine win their matches.
• With his 3-2 victory against F&M, team captain Senen Ubina cracked the Mids' all-time top 10 win list and is tied for eighth with 74 victories. Dylan Sweeney moved into a tie for 12th alongside Colin Barry (2011-15) with 69 wins, while Jamie Kjorlien pushed up to 18th alongside Randy Beck (2013-17).
• Five players have reached double-digit wins for the Mids, including Michael Kacergis, Ben Korn, Jack Lentz and Senen Ubina who have all recorded 12 wins. Dylan Sweeney has turned in an 11-6 record.
• Freshman Ryan York, meanwhile, needs just one win to add his name to the double-digt wins list.

• Eighth-year head coach John White has directed the Dragons to a 5-9 record.
• Six of Drexel's eight losses have been to teams who currently reside among the nation's top 10 - #2 Rochester,#3 Trinity, #4 Penn, #5 Yale, #8 Princeton and #8 Dartmouth. Its two loss against non top-10 teams were to Cornell (5-4) and last weekend against George Washington (8-1).
• Freshman Matias Knudsen leads the Dragons in the wins column with a 12-3 record at the No. 2 position, while second-year standout Dylan Kachur has amassed a 9-5 mark at the No. 3 spot. Senior Bransten Ming has posted a 7-7 record at the No. 1 spot.
 
The Series
• Navy and Drexel will meet for the 12th time since the series began in 2010 and the second time this season. Drexel recorded a 7-2 win over the Mids on Feb. 2 in Philadelphia to take a 6-5 advantage in the series.
• The Mids won the first five matches of the series, however, Drexel has won six in a row.
• This will be the second straight year the two teams have met during the regular season and at the CSA Team Championship.
• Navy's last win in the series was a CSA Championship match in 2014 (5-4).

Against the Field
Navy put together a combined 3-3 record against the other seven Hoehn Division competitors this season, defeating Virginia (5-4), Franklin & Marshall (5-4) and Western Ontario (5-4), while dropping decisions to Drexel (7-2), Cornell (7-2) and George Washington (7-2).  The Mids did not play St. Lawrence.  The following is Navy's all-time mark against each of the participating teams:  Virginia (10-0), Western Ontario (5-7), St. Lawrence (4-3), Drexel (5-6), Cornell (17-17), George Washington (24-5) and Franklin & Marshall (37-22).
