Pineda Highlights Patriot League All-Academic Selections

Pineda was joined by Jake Brophy and Benjamin Stewart on the Patriot League All-Academic men’s team, while Sam Orie was selected to the women's team.

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Senior pole vaulter Stefano Pineda (Hockessin, Del.) was named the 2019 Patriot League Indoor Track and Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year as announced by the conference office on Monday morning. In addition, Pineda joined Jake Brophy (New Hope, Pa.) and Benjamin Stewart (Charlestown, R.I.) on the Patriot League's 10-person All-Academic men's team. On the women's side, thrower Sam Orie (Greensburg, Pa.) was selected to the All-Academic team for the first time in her career.
 
Pineda boasts a 4.0 grade point average in mechanical engineering as a senior. He earned Second Team All-Patriot League accolades three times in his career, including this season with a personal best height of 5.20m (17-00.75) in the pole vault, which ranks fifth in Navy's all-time history. Pineda was a 2018 CoSIDA Academic All-American, 2017 USTFCCCA Scholar Athlete, and has now been selected to the PL All-Academic team four times (2018, '19 Indoor; 2017, '18 Outdoor).
 
Brophy has a 3.71 GPA in computer science as a junior. He is a six-time All-Patriot League performer, including winning the 1-mile run and 4x800m relay this indoor season. Brophy was a 2018 CoSIDA Academic All-District (First Team) and 2017 USTFCCCA All-Academic (Cross Country) selection. Brophy has been named to three Patriot League All-Academic teams (2017 Cross Country; 2018, '19 Indoor).
 
Stewart, who earned First Team All-Patriot League distinction in the heptathlon this indoor season, was named to his third Patriot League All-Academic team (2017, '19 Indoor; 2018 Outdoor). The multi-event specialist is a four-time All-Patriot League performer, while also earning 2018 CoSIDA Academic All-District (First Team) honors. The senior has a 3.70 cumulative GPA in honors ocean engineering.
 
Orie was named to her first Patriot League All-Academic team. The sophomore has a 3.96 GPA in chemistry. She earned Second Team All-Patriot League in the shot put. In addition, Orie holds the second-best throw in the shot put in Navy track and field history, posting a distance of 14.25m (46-09.00) in the Army-Navy Indoor Star Meet as part of the Star Series presented by USAA.
 
Navy track and field returns to action on Saturday, March 9, as the Midshipmen travel to California to open up the outdoor season at the annual San Diego Challenge.
