Sprint Football Begins CSFL Title Defense on Friday

Navy kicks off the 2019 season against St. Thomas Aquinas.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy sprint football team will begin its Collegiate Sprint Football League title defense on Friday, Sept. 13, as the Midshipmen open the 2019 campaign with St. Thomas Aquinas College at 7:00 p.m. at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Live stats will be available throughout the game.
 
2019 Team Captains
This season, Navy will be led by a pair of senior captains – Troy Monroe and J.T. Thompson. Monroe, a 2018 Second Team All-CSFL selection, will serve as the defensive captain, while Thompson will be the offensive representative.
 
All-Time Series
The game between St. Thomas Aquinas and Navy will mark the first time the two teams will have met on the field against each other. STAC finished 2-4 overall in 2018 and 1-2 in the CSFL-North, while Navy finished 7-1 overall, and 4-0 in the CSFL-South.
 
Sprint Football Tradition
The Navy sprint football team has 37 Collegiate Sprint Football League championships (29 outright) in the program's 73-year history – the most among any school in league history. The team boasts an all-time winning percentage of .831, including a 112-13 (.896) mark since 2001, including 79-10 (.888) in CSFL play. Navy holds a 43-36-1 (.544) all-time series advantage over Army West Point. The Midshipmen have totaled more than 388 All-CSFL honors over the last 18 seasons, with a Navy player being selected as the league's MVP eight times during this span.
 
2018 Season Recap
Sprint football finished the year 7-1 overall and 4-0 in the CSFL – South Division. Navy (South Champion) posted a 24-10 victory over rival Army West Point (North Champion) to claim the Collegiate Sprint Football League title in the second annual CSFL Championship game, played at Torne Valley Sports Complex in Hillburn, N.Y.
 
The Navy sprint football team had 15 different players earn accolades, including seven players named First Team All-CSFL and five named to the second team.
 
On offense, running back Caleb Champion, offensive lineman Jim Kenneally, and Dane Livengood ('19) were selected to the first team. Defensive lineman Nick Scalise, linebacker Dean Rye ('19), defensive back Grant Hooper, and punter George Skinner ('19) were first-team defensive selections.
 
Quarterback Braydan Chmiel, defensive lineman Shawn Kluchinsky ('19), defensive lineman Gavin O'Donnell ('19), linebacker Troy Monroe, and defensive back Miles Whitlow ('19) were all selected to the second team. In addition, offensive lineman Reid Kaplan ('19), linebacker Mason Hooten ('19), and linebacker Sheppard Wilson ('19) earned honorable mention accolades.
 
Sprint opened the season with a 45-7 road victory over Franklin Pierce. For his efforts in the game, kicker Jared Swenson was named Special Teams Player of the Week. Swenson scored nine points, converting six PATs, while adding a field goal.
 
Despite dropping a 17-14 decision to Army West Point in the annual Star Series Game presented by USAA, linebacker Dean Rye was selected as CSFL Defensive Player of the Week. Rye led the Navy defense against the Black Knights, boasting a game-high 17 tackles, including a game-best 10 solo stops.
 
Navy rolled over Mansfield in the CSFL-South Division opener, posting a 55-6 victory. Linebacker Troy Monroe and kicker Jared Swenson were selected at the Defensive and Special Teams Players of the Week, respectively. Monroe recorded four tackles, including three solo stops, posting a team-high 3.0 tackles for loss, including a team-best 2.0 sacks. In addition, he forced two fumbles, while also recovering a fumble. Swenson, who picked up his second CSFL honor of the season, scored 17 points. He was a perfect 7-for-7 on extra point attempts, while knocking in a pair of field goals (29 yards, 48 yards).
 
Navy used a strong second quarter to post a 45-14 victory on the road against Caldwell. Swenson earned his third CSFL Special Teams Player of the Week accolade of the season. Swenson finished the game against Caldwell with nine points, connecting on six extra point opportunities and converting a field goal (41 yards) opportunity.
 
For the second consecutive week, Navy used a strong second half performance to post a 31-0 victory over Chestnut Hill at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium to secure an opportunity for the CSFL South Division Championship. The Midshipmen's defense held the Griffins scoreless and did not allow a first down in the second half, holding the visitors to 31 yards of total offense in the final two quarters.
 
For the second straight season, Navy played Penn for the CSFL South title. With a chance to go to the CSFL Championship on the line, the Midshipmen posted a 20-9 victory over the Quakers. Quarterback Braydan Chmiel was named the CSFL Offensive Player of the Week. Chmiel finished the game 9-for-14 for 130 yards in the air with a touchdown, while also rushing for 136 yards on 16 carries with a score.
 
Sprint closed out the regular season with a 38-7 road win against Post. Navy's offense outgained Post, 422-to-250, including a 243-to-93 advantage in the run game. Running back Caleb Champion went over 100 yards in the game, netting 105 rushing yards with a touchdown.
 
Navy posted a 24-10 victory over rival Army West Point to claim the Collegiate Sprint Football League title in the second annual CSFL Championship game, played at Torne Valley Sports Complex in Hillburn, N.Y. In the game, Navy outgained Army West Point, 361-287, including a 289-16 advantage on the ground. Defensively, the Midshipmen tallied 53 total tackles, including 5.0 tackles for loss, and 3.0 sacks. The defense broke up 12 passes, recorded an interception, and blocked a punt.
