ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy track and field team recorded 12 performances (10 women / two men) that rank in the program's all-time top 10, including setting the school record in the pentathlon, at the annual Wesley A. Brown Invitational over the weekend. In addition, the Midshipmen tallied 37 IC4A / ECAC qualifying times / marks during the meet.
"It was a really solid performance all around," Director of Navy Track and Field
Jamie Cook said after the meet. "We are continuing to get better. In all event groups, I thought there was some good performances. We are going to have to continue to work hard and continue to get better. It was a fun meet. I think everyone had a good time. The excitement level for the team was really good at the end of the meet."
In the pentathlon, sophomore Lindsay Lewis (Lanham, Md.) broke her own school record, tallying 3,547 total points to top her previous mark by 29 points. In addition to Lewis, Cat Goss (Clinton, Conn.), Alexa Arthun (Manhattan, Mont.), Erin Higgins (Ashburn, Va.), and Katie Halbert (Keller, Texas) each posted top 10 performances in the pentathlon. Goss posted a total score of 3,308, while Arthun was four points back with a score of 3,304. Higgins tallied a score of 3,261 while Halbert finished with 3,236.
Senior captain Regine Tugade (Dededo, Guam) finished one hundredth shy of her personal best to finish with the third fastest time (7.63) all-time in the 60m dash. The 200m dash saw Chloe Alfieri (Harvard, Mass.), Molly Mangan (Pittsburgh, Pa.), and Tugade finish with top 10 times in program history. Alfieri clocked a 24.72, while Mangan was just back with a 24.77 and Tugade rounded out the trio with a 24.80.
Freshman Charlene Morke (Isanti, Minn.) became just the second athlete in Navy history to top 4.00m in the pole vault, posting personal best height of 4.00m (13-01.50).
Clayton Thompson (Corpus Christi, Texas) tallied a score of 5,501 points in the men's heptathlon to fall just eight points shy of the Midshipmen school record. He was joined by
Thomas Johnstone (Los Gatos, Calif.) who tallied 4,927 points to notch the 10th best performance in school history.
Assistant coach
Joe Delgado won the heptathlon with a collective score of 5,775 points.
"I don't know of anyone who has scored more than him so far this year," Cook said of Delgado. "That is pretty good because he is coming off of an injury. It is the first time he has competed in a year and a half or two years. He is a great example to the team. I think it was a great experience for them and definitely for Joe. He has done a great job coaching and leading by example too. He will continue to pursue his goals and that is only a benefit for our team. He doesn't get a chance to compete often, but did a great job today."
Navy returns to action next weekend as the Midshipmen travel to Fairfax, Va. to participate in the Patriot Games on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 24-25.
