ANNAPOLIS, Md. –– The Navy men's tennis team recorded its two of its best victories of the season on Sunday as the Mids (9-3) defeated Monmouth (3-2) by the score of 4-0 and Richmond (3-3) by the count of 6-1 at the Tose Family Tennis Center in Annapolis.
Navy won each of the four doubles matches that were played to their conclusion and won eight of the nine singles matches that were finished. All of the eight singles victories came in straight sets.
The morning match featured two teams that appeared in the 2019 NCAA Tournament. Monmouth's lone regular season loss a year ago was a defeat to Navy.
The Mids recorded 6-1 victories at both No. 1 and 2 doubles to earn the available point.
Jack Dabek (So., Dublin, Ohio) and
Greg Durham (Sr., Melbourne Beach, Fla.) won the match at the No. 1 flight with
Christian Pumpelly (Fr., Atlanta, Ga.) and
Gavin Segraves (Fr., Charlottesville, Va.) combining for the win at No, 2 doubles.
Jan Kjellberg (So., White Plains, N.Y.) placed Navy's second point of the day on the scoreboard when he won a 6-2, 6-2 decision at No. 4 singles. The lead grew to 3-0 with a 6-3, 6-2 win by
Derrick Thompson (So., Towson, Md.) at the No. 2 flight.
Andrew Ton (Jr., Milpitas, Calif.) then notched a 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 1 singles to close out the proceedings.
Navy then posted its victory over a Richmond team that defeated the Mids, 4-3, last season on its way to reaching the championship match of the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament.
Navy's No. 3 doubles team of
Finn Garner (Fr., Arnold, Md.) and
Reilly Wilson (Fr., Greensboro, N.C.) won the first match to be completed. Following the 6-1 by those two Mids, Navy claimed the doubles point when Thompson and Ton won by the same score at the No. 1 flight.
The Mids would go on to win five singles matches in straight sets. Thompson recorded a 6-0, 6-3 win at the No. 2 flight, and Segraves won, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 4 to make the score 3-0. The Spiders tallied a win at No. 5 singles, but Garner followed with a 6-2, 6-4 victory at No. 3 singles to secure the victory.
"Jan and Gavin played very well without any let up over the course of their victories," said Navy head coach
Chris Garner. "Andrew and Derrick had a terrific day in both singles and doubles. Both led with their play and energy,"
Navy will play host to Villanova and Morgan State Saturday.
