Gabriella Mayes and Torrance Kang Earn All-GARC Honors

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Prior to the Great American Rifle Conference Championship, the league announced its annual awards at the postseason banquet on Thursday night. Gabriella Mayes (So., Rio Rancho, N.M.) and Torrance Kang (Jr., Columbia, Md.) represented Navy and earned postseason accolades from the conference.
 
Mayes was named to the All-GARC Air Rifle Honorable Mention Team and Kang was selected as Navy's Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
 
This marks the first season Mayes has earned All-GARC honors after she paced the Midshipmen in air rifle with an average of 589.7 on the year. In 13 events leading up the weekend, Mayes shot over 590 in air rifle on eight different occasions, which included a stretch of six-straight matches of at least 590 points with five of those breaking 593. Mayes broke the program record for best air rifle score in a match after she shot a 597 on Jan. 17 at home against Nebraska.
 
Mayes also led the Midshipmen with a 576.4 in smallbore and entered the conference championship with an average of 1,166.1 in aggregate scoring.
 
For the second-straight season, Kang was selected as Navy's Scholar-Athlete of the Year. On the range, Kang posted an overall average of 1,163.5 and is second on the team with a smallbore average of 575.8. In air rifle, the junior has averaged 587.8 for the season.
 
The Midshipmen now gear up for the 2020 NCAA National Championship on March 13-14 in Lexington, Ky.
