Box Score ANNAPOLIS, Md. –– Members of the Navy men's tennis team combined for 17 main draw victories in singles (12) and doubles (5) during the ITA Atlantic Regional held this weekend in Annapolis.
"A lot of great tennis played over the weekend here in Annapolis," said Navy head coach
Chris Garner.
The event drew players from 16 schools located in the region, such as Virginia, Penn State and Georgetown, and served as one of two events helping to comprise the field for this week's ITA Super Regional at Old Dominion. Singles players who reached the quarterfinals and doubles teams that reached the semifinals in Annapolis advanced to Norfolk.
Falling one victory short of advancing to play at Old Dominion were
Gavin Segraves (Jr., Charlottesville, Va.) in singles and the doubles team of
Sasha Panyan (So., Lutherville, Md.) and
Derrick Thompson (Sr., Towson, Md.). Â
Segraves reached the round of 16 in singles. He received a bye in the round of 128, then posted a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Nassim Fenjiro from Saint Joseph's in the round of 64. That was followed by his tallying a 6-2, 6-2 win over Harrison Janes of Penn State in the round of 32. He would lose his next match, a 6-2, 6-2 decision, to Ingio Torre Martin from VCU to finish one win shy of advancing.
Segraves was one of four Mids to reach the round of 32 in singles. Thompson won a straight-set match in the round of 64 before he lost a three-set decision to Delaware's James Wilkinson.Â
Finn Garner (Jr., Arnold, Md.) won a 6-4, 6-4 match in the round of 64 and lost in a third-set tiebreaker, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (7-1) to Bora Sengul of Penn State in the round of 32.Â
Jake Fishkin (Sr., Baltimore, Md.) lost just three games in winning a match in the round of 128, lost only one game in winning in the round of 64 and dropped a 6-0, 6-1 match to Nathan Perrone from Saint Joseph's in the round of 32.
"Gavin made a strong push to the final match, but his opponent from VCU played incredibly well to advance," said Garner. "Derrick, Jake and Finn also played well to reach the third round of singles.
The Panyan-Thompson team first received a bye in the round of 64, then won an 8-6 match over Howard's Tory Bailey and Marcel Dawson in the round of 32. The Mids reached the quarterfinals with an 8-4 win over Delaware's Guilhermo Valdoleiros and Pascal Wagemaker in the round of 16. The Navy pair would lose in a tiebreaker, 8-7 (7-3) to Temple's Thibault and Leo Raquin.
Also reaching the round of 16 was the team of
Jack Dabek (Sr., Dublin, Ohio) and Fishkin. The team joined Panyan and Thompson in receiving a first-round bye, then posted an 8-5 win over the Duquesne team of Alejandro Rodriguez-Vidal and Tam Teberikov in the round of 32. Penn State's Mike Eala and Chari Morgan defeated the Mids, 8-6, in the round of 16.
"Derrick and Sasha had a very close match to continue on to ODU this coming weekend, but their opponents came up with some terrific shots to get the win," said Garner. "Jack and Jake looked good, but eventually lost a close match to a solid Penn State team."
Navy's fall slate continues Nov. 5-7 at the San Diego Invite.
