BETHLEHEM, Pa. –– Members of the Navy swimming and diving teams combined to earn three weekly awards from the Patriot League on Tuesday.
Caleb Mauldin (Sr., Chesapeake, Va.) was named the men's swimmer of the week,
Martina Thomas (Sr., Fayetteville, Ark.) was selected as the women's swimmer of the week and
Hannah Montau (Sr., Germantown, Md.) received the women's diver-of-the-week award.
Mauldin earned his accolade for his efforts during Navy's meets at Princeton and at Columbia. He was part of three second-place showings in the team's 208-92 loss to the Tigers. Mauldin first swam the backstroke leg on the 200 medley relay team that was edged for the victory by two-hundredths of a second (1:29.59). He had staked the Mids to a lead of nearly one-half of a second with his lead-off backstroke leg time of 22.65. Mauldin would also place second in the 100 backstroke as his time of 48.81 was 14-hundredths of a second behind the event winner. He closed the meet by swimming on Navy's second-place finishing 400 freestyle relay team. He swam the second-fastest anchor leg (44.48) in the field, which drew the Mids (3:01.12) to within four-tenths of a second of the winning team.
The following day in New York, Mauldin was part of four wins during Navy's 169-131 victory over the Lions. He again swam the backstroke leg in the 200 medley relay race, an event the Mids won by nearly one-half of a second with an overall time of 1:30.26. Individually, Mauldin won the 100 backstroke by just over seven-tenths of a second (49.95) and the 100 freestyle by just under that same amount of time (45.71). He closed the meet by helping Navy to a one-quarter of a second victory in the 400 freestyle relay (3:03.25).
Thomas and Montau were rewarded for their respective performances during Navy's 168.5-129.5 loss at Princeton.
Thomas began her meet by winning the 200 freestyle by two seconds. Her time of 1:46.79 was under the NCAA B cut standard of 1:47.12. She then placed second by six-tenths of second in the 100 freestyle with her effort of 50.32. That time was eight-tenths of a second away from the NCAA B cut standard of 49.51. Thomas closed the meet by swimming the anchor leg on Navy's 400 freestyle relay team that placed second. The Mids combined for a time of 3:23.73, with her individual effort of 49.64 making her the second-fastest anchor leg swimmer by 12-hundredths of a second.
Montau swept the two diving events against Princeton. She first scored 277.05 points to win the one-meter board by 6.30 points, then tallied 318.45 points to win the three-meter event by 33.45 points. Her latter score was less than two points away from the NCAA Zone Championship qualifying point total, a standard she had met earlier this year.
The Mids will close their regular season Saturday when they play host to the Navy Invitational in Lejeune Hall starting at noon.
