Road-Tested Mids Look to Extend Winning Streak with Three Weekend Duals on the Docket

• A Look At This Weekend: Navy (3-2, 1-1 EIWA) will wrestle its final road duals of the season this weekend when it heads to New York for matches against EIWA foes Columbia, #11 Cornell and Binghamton. The Mids open competition on Saturday at 1:00 pm in a neutral site bout against Columbia at Cornell's Friedman Wrestling Center in Ithaca, N.Y. Navy will then battle Cornell in the nightcap beginning at 5:00 pm. The Mids close out the weekend on Sunday with a 2:00 pm dual against Binghamton at the Events Center in Vestal, N.J.

• Follow the Action: The Cornell and Binghamton matches will be streamed online via ESPN+ (subscription based). The Navy vs. Columbia dual, however, will not be streamed.

• Scouting Columbia: Led by sixth-year head coach Zach Tanelli, Columbia heads into the weekend with a 1-5 overall record and a 0-2 mark in EIWA action. Prior to meeting the Mids on Saturday afternoon, Columbia will face Binghamton on Friday evening in Vestal, N.Y. The Lions' lone win this season was a 46-0 shutout over LIU on Jan. 9. In addition to their season-opening loss to Michigan (34-3), they have lost four-consecutive duals - #17 Lehigh (20-16), #4 Oklahoma State (35-6), #21 Princeton (27-12) and #23 Penn (32-3).
• Columbia has three wrestlers who currently reside among InterMat's top-33 rankings - Joe Manchio (Jr / 125 / #28), Matt Kazimir (Jr / 141 / #16) and Joshua Ogunsanya (So / 165 / #21). Rookie 174-pound Nick Fine is atop the wins leader board for the Lions with a 15-8 mark, while juniors Matt Kazimir (141) and Angelo Rini (133) have won 14 matches each.

• Navy-Columbia Series: The two programs have met on 23 previous occasions with Navy winning all 23. The series dates back to March 11, 1911, when the Mids scored a 6-1 victory over the Lions in Annapolis. However, Navy and Columbia have not met since Jan. 5, 2007, when the Mids earned a 31-9 victory over Columbia in South Grand Prairie Texas. Remarkably, Navy has given up double-digit points to the Lions just once in the 23 meetings - a 27-10 victory on Columbia's home mat on Jan. 19, 1980. This will be the third dual in the series wrestled at a neutral site. In fact, each of the last two meetings have been on a neutral mat - 1997 in Bethlehem, Pa. and 2007 in South Grand Prairie, Texas.

• Scouting Cornell: 2011 Cornell graduate Mike Grey was promoted to head coach at his alma mater this season after the departure of longtime head coach and Grey mentor Rob Koll who is now the head coach at Stanford. Grey began his coaching career at Cornell as a a volunteer assistant coach in 2011 and two year later was elevated to assistant coach. He was promoted to associate head coach in 2019. Since joining the Big Red staff, Grey has helped the program to eight Ivy League and six EIWA titles, as well as top-10 NCAA team finishes each year.
• 11th-ranked Cornell owns a 6-2 record, including a 2-0 EIWA mark, after all of the Ivy League schools sat out the 2020-21 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Big Red have wins over #23 Stanford (30-9), #22 Northern Iowa (29-7), #8 Virginia Tech (18-15), Army (28-10), Harvard (35-6) and Brown (47-3). Their losses have been against #2 Penn State (21-16) and #17 Lehigh (18-15). While Cornell will face Columbia on Saturday prior to its match against the Midshipmen, the Big Red head into the weekend having won each of its last three matches. Dating back to 2010-11, Cornell owns a 79-5 record (84 duals) against current EIWA foes. Additionally, Cornell stands 106-1 against EIWA teams outside of Lehigh (2019 loss at Princeton) since 2004-05.
• Cornell has wrestlers ranked at nine of the 10 weight classes according to this week's InterMat top-33 rankings - Vito Arujau (So / 125 / #3), Dom LaJoie (Sr / 133 / #29), Yianni Diakomihalis (Jr / 149 / #1), Colton Yapoujian (So / 157 / #25), Julian Ramirez (Fr / 165 / #9), Chris Foca (So / 174 / #13), Jonathan Loew (Jr / 184 / #15), Jacob Cardenas (So / 197 / #19) and Lewis Fernandes (So / 285 / #17). Sophomore 174-pound Chris Foca leads the team in wins with a 17-4 record, while rookie 165-pounder Julian Ramirez stands 16-3. Meanwhile, starters Vito Arujau (6-0), Yianni Diakomihalis (8-0) and Julian Ramirez (8-0) are undefeated in dual action this season. Diakomihalis has won 60-consecutive matches, the second-longest winning streak in school history. Additionally, Arujau has never lost a dual match (22-0), posting a 16-0 mark as a freshman in 2019-20 and is 6-0 this season.

• Navy-Cornell Series: Meeting for the 27th time in series history, Navy owns a 20-6 lead in a series that dates back to Feb. 24, 2012, when Cornell dealt the Mids a 4-3 loss in Annapolis. While the two programs have a long history, nearly a quarter of a century has passed since they last met. Cornell posted a 32-3 victory over the Mids in Annapolis on Jan. 8, 1998. Navy has won 10 of the 11 matches wrestled in Ithaca with its lone loss a 13-11 blemish on March 17, 1923. Meanwhile, Navy's last win in the series was a 19-13 decision over the Big Red on Jan. 13, 1995, the last time the two met in Ithaca.

• Scouting Binghamton: His his fifth season as head coach, Kyle Borshoff has guided Binghamton to a 5-9 record this season, including a 3-1 EIWA mark. The Bearcats have wins over New Jersey City U. (53-0), Edinboro (29-12), Sacred Heart (39-7), Drexel (25-13) and LIU (28-13). Their losses have been against Cleveland State (22-18), Rutgers (34-9), Stanford (25-13), Buffalo (17-16), North Dakota State (27-12), Missouri (33-6), NC State (35-7), Central Michigan (26-16) and Lehigh (24-14). While Binghamton will face Columbia on Friday evening, the Bearcats head into the weekend having won each of its last two matches.
• Binghamton has four wrestlers who currently reside among InterMat's top-33 rankings - Anthony Sobotker (Jr / 133 / #30), Ryan Anderson (So / 141 / #33), Lou DePrez (Jr / 197 / #15) and Joe Doyle (Jr / 285 / #20). DePrez is pacing the team in wins with a 20-3 record, while boasting a 10-1 dual mark. Sobotker and redshirt senior 149-pounder Nick Lombard, meanwhile, have recorded 14 wins apiece.

• Four wrestlers - Josh Koderhandt (133), Jonathan Miranda (141/149), Andrew Cerniglia (157) and Jacob Koser (197) - have participated in all five duals for the Mids this season with Koderhandt, Cerniglia and Koser posting 4-1 records.
• Navy has had at least two freshmen in its lineup in four of the five duals this season and three freshmen in three of the five duals - Lehigh (133 Koderhandt, 285 Catka), Hofstra (125 DelViscio, 133 Koderhandt, 174 Crebs), Ohio (133 Koderhandt, 165 Sammy Starr, 174 Cael Crebs, 285 Ryan Catka), Cleveland State (133 Koderhandt, 165 Sammy Starr, 174 Cael Crebs).

• After dropping his first dual of the season (at Maryland), Jacob Koser (197) has won each of his last four duals and stands 18-6 all-time in dual competition.
• Team captain Jacob Allen (Sr / 125 / Poway, Calif.) is closing in on 50-career victories after posting a 3-1 win over Cleveland State's Logan Heil. Allen stands 47-36 over four seasons.
• While Andrew Cerniglia (157) is atop Navy's wins leader board with a 19-4 record, it will be a race to see who reaches the 20-win mark first this season, as Josh Koderhandt (17-5), Val Park (17-9) and Jacob Koser (17-4) enter the weekend with 17 wins apiece. Meanwhile, heavyweights Ryan Catka and Grady Griess have both produced 16 wins.
