The Navy wrestling team (3-4, 1-3 EIWA) had its three-match dual winning streak snapped on Saturday, dropping duals to Columbia (2-7, 2-5 EIWA)) and 11th-ranked Cornell (8-2, 5-1 EIWA) at the Friedman Wrestling Center in Ithaca, N.Y.
"Against Columbia, we didn't do a good job of wrestling through matches," said second-year Navy head coach
Cary Kolat. "We eased our way into bouts and tried to get it going late which is not how you are going to win matches. You have to be the aggressor and set the pace and take the shots to your opponent.
"I think we made some adjustments for the evening match and displayed better pace and attack rate against Cornell," added Kolat. "We scored earlier in the matches which helped, but our defense has to get better before the season ends. We saw how that impacted our matches in particular against Cornell."
Columbia won the first four matches against the Mids to open up a 13-0 lead before 20th-ranked
Andrew Cerniglia (So / 157 / Nazareth, Pa.) got Navy on the scoreboard with a 12-7 victory over Andrew Garr. While Navy would go on to win three of the final four matches, including bonus-point victories by
Jacob Koser (Jr / Dillsburg, Pa.) and
Ryan Catka (Fr / Brookhaven, Pa.) at 197 and 285 pounds, respectively, the slow start would prove to be too difficult to overcome as Columbia topped the Mids 20-15.
Navy lost four of its six bouts against the Lions by three points or less, including the opening two matches of the day. Twentieth-ranked Joe Manchio was able to outlast Navy team captain
Jacob Allen (Sr / 125 / Poway, Calif.) in sudden victory by a 3-1 count, while #21
Josh Koderhandt (Fr / 133 / Belleville, Ill.) was edged by Angelo Rini, 11-8.
Cael Crebs (Fr / 174 / Montoursville, Pa.) picked up a solid win for the Mids with a 3-2 victory over Columbia's Nick Fine. Fine came into the match atop the Lions' wins leader board with a 16-8 record, including a 5-2 dual mark. Koser cut into Columbia's lead with his win by fall over Joe Franzese at 4:33, while Catka was impressive in his 16-4 major decision over Danny Conley.

In the nightcap, 11th-ranked Cornell powered its way past Navy by earning wins at 125, 141, 149, 157, 174, 184, 197 and 285 pounds en route to a 34-9 victory over the Midshipmen. Six of the eight wins by the Big Red featured wins by nationally-ranked wrestlers, including #3 Vito Arujau (125) who has never lost a dual match (24-0) during his career and #1 Yianni Diakomihalis (149) who has won 62-consecutive matches which is the second-longest winning streak in program history.
Vito Arujau, who has won seven of his eight duals this winter by way of bonus points, gave Cornell an early 5-0 lead when his riding time point gave him a 20-5 tech fall over
Jacob Allen. The Mids, however, got a lift from rookie
Josh Koderhandt (Fr / 133 / Belleville, Ill.) who made a statement by pinning 29th-ranked Dom LaJoie just 50 seconds into the match to give Navy its only lead of the dual at 6-5. Cornell went on to win seven of the last eight bouts, scoring bonus points in four of the seven. Meanwhile, joining Koderhandt in the win column was
Val Park (Jr / 165 / Edmond, Okla.) who was able to control his match against Adam Santoro from the opening whistle en route to an 8-3 win.
